How does this hook remover work?

Recommended Posts

Was given this hook remover by a friend. Checking up on it it looks like it gets pretty good reviews so I'll give it a go. The thing is I am not quite sure how to use it. It has a "handle" you squeeze and it closes down that little hook on the end. Do you just reach in and set this hook around the fish hook at some point and squeeze as hard as you can and not let go to keep hold of the fish hook? Seems like with both items being metal it could real easily slide and not hold when you are trying to manipulate the hook. Anyone have any experience with this model?

That's the one I have used for years, it works very well. You want to grab the hook as close to the bend a possible.

Depending on the location of your hook I still carry needle nose pliers.

Does it hold well? It just seems to me if I grab a hook that's shank is round with this thing that it wouldn't grip or hold. It's a crude example but the only thing I can think of is taking a pair of metal handcuffs (the hook remover in this example) and fitting it around a metal pole and it just kin did sliding up and down the pole because they are both metal and round an it never really grips or holds. I'll have to try it out but I'm skeptical.

My partner uses one with good success.  I have one, but prefer pliars

They work!

Almost every salt water fisherman I know or fished with uses one.

They work just fine and don't slip

How does two flat surfaces of needle nose pliers hold on a round hook shank?

The harder you squeeze the tighter they hold, same applies here.

This is all I use because I debarb my hooks and they slip right out with this tool.  No single hook barbs for 15 years now.  No, I do not lose fish.

Does this style of hook remover do much with treble hooks or only with traditional single book baits?

I use mine on every hook but as mentioned above I still keep a pair of needle nose pliers around.

I got the field and stream version of this hook remover this week.

This thing flat out works! Where has it been all my life!

Caught 3 Trout today and wasn’t planning on keeping any. 2 of the Trout were hooked deep so I used this device. Slide The devices hook down the line until you get to your hook. Squeeze the device until the hook shank is in the recessed area, give a twist and hook comes right out. Both Trout released safely.

With LMB you can get away with using your finger to push down on the single hook bend away from the hook barb. This hook remover works the same way.

This diagram is the best I could find to show the method.

before turning your hand make make sure to squeeze and hold the device so your hook shank is in the upside down “U” shaped recessed area.

Like Tom mentioned this remover is great for fish with smaller mouths than a LMB. I can get those out by hand or pliers.
