Who can recommend me a jig head?

Featured Replies

I am looking for a 1/4oz black arkie style jighead with weedguard for some GYCB 5" double tail hula grub. Looking through Bass Pro I was surprised at how few options I had. I am guessing an arkie style would give me more versatility that a football head but I would listen to that argument if someone wanted to make it.

Send a DM to @cadman. He can guide you in the right direction. He has about every jighead out there. I bought some exactly like you're asking about. And you're correct that the Arky head is the ATV of jigheads. I also like the grass style because i fish in a lot of grass. Both are a good compromise.

I have hardly ever seen arky jig heads in store with or without weed guards. Many options out there?

Start with Yamamoto weedless Hula  jig, plain black with  Owner hook.

Bass Pro is famous for featuring their own branded terminal tackle in their catalog and then just showing a few other brands.

If you want to get a better understanding of the scope and variety of jig heads available, to to Tackle Warehouse or another site - they carry a lot more variety prices more or less the same, maybe a little less.

Next, addressing the issue of the Arkie style being more "versatile", my question is "Why be versatile?"  Why not make your best guess at the jig that will best handle the conditions you'll be facing.  There is no question that fishing in rocks, a football head will outperform an arkie head.   In thick vegetation a pointed nose, cone head type jig will come through better than an arkie jig.   Dragging a jig through various bottom conditions, that becomes a judgement call.

If versatility is the goal, IMO the most versatile presentation of the hula grub would be tx rigged with a 3/0 hook and a 1/4 or 5/16 tungsten sinker - pegged.

Have you ever fished one on a shakyhead? I started fishing mine on a football shakyhead instead of a jighead with a weedguard and won't ever go back.

Go on the GYCB site, online store; jigs-Hula jig, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 oz in black, then order the Hula Grubs at the same time.
