Fishing Knots in Two Different Lines

Featured Replies

I've been trying to find the best knot to use to tie a crankbait. People are saying to use a Palomar, improved clinch, Trilene, or a uni knot. These are all great options, but I have two things that make this questionable: split rings and line type. My four crankbaits come with split rings, and I'm not removing the rings anytime soon. What are the best knots to tie crankbaits with monofilament and the best knots for crankbaits with fluorocarbon? Both lines are light and under 10-pound test.

I use the Trilene knot with both types of line for years and never a problem. Most important thing is to wet knot and tighten slowly

I've never had an issue with the Palomar Knot with either mono or FC. Again, wet the knot and slowly tighten...this should be a given no matter what knot you're tying.

Double San Diego jam knot.

But I do remove the split rings and use a snap.

Palomar and Palomar. And if you ever decide to use braid...Palomar. If you go heavier than 10 lb test, then use a Palomar. Use something other than a crank bait...Palomar

San Diego Jam on mono and FC. Palomar on braid.

For mono, I like a uni knot, and for flurocarbon it's like a 'double' uni that Shaw Grigsby promotes.  I've seen a lot of folks use the double San Diego Jam knot too for flurocarbon.

I've tried loop knots like the Rapala, and they give crankbaits and jerkbaits great action, but are tedious for me to tie on the water (I'm mostly out of a kayak).  Getting the loop the size I want seems to be an issue.  Adding a split ring has been my solution, although I may give snaps a try one day.

For 10 lb mono and braid I use a uni knot.

For 10 lb flurocarbon I use a San Diego jam.

Which is what I was using two days ago to land this freight train.

I see no reason to change.

I use a Palomar and Improved Clinch pretty interchangeably.

I generally find myself using the improved clinch knot because its easier to get a short tag end (less wasted line).  I have braid to flouro-leaders on most of my setups.  So in an effort to make the leader last as long as possible, I want to minimize my tag ends.  I struggle to tie a palomar around a decent sized crankbait without at least a 3-4" tag end!  On an improved clinch, the tag can be less than 1"!

A uni knot, 4-6 turns on any line. Sometimes I'll use a palomar especially braid because it cinches down so tightly.
