I like a straight tail when imitating baitfish, and a creature with no or minimal action when I'm fishing it more like a jig. The issue with baits with their own action, is that they can interfere with and conflict with what the blade is doing. Are there swimbaits and rage tail things that will work well as a chatterbait trailers out of the package? Yes, but often they will limit the speed at which they work well.

This. I’ve found the action of the chatterbait isn’t the same when the trailer has its own action. Not that it can’t or won’t work, but I’ve had much better success with trailers that have little to no action. I mostly use, and have had the most success with, zman razor shad because the have very little action and they last forever.

To mimic a fish I like a Rage Swimmer or Blade Minnow. For a craw I like a Rage Menace/Bug.
