What Type of rod for larger/heavier swimbaits

Featured Replies

Anyone have any suggestions on a budget friendly rod for larger/heavier swimbaits, and would it be possible to use the same rod for frogging and heavy cover jigging?

Diawa DXSB - comes in four flavors from MH (1-6 oz) to XXH (4-14 oz). Priced at about $110 retail. I was thinking about getting into the larger swimbaits, and this was the rod I'd picked. Right now that's on the back-burner.

What size swimbaits are you asking about; brands or weight needed to answer your question.

Tough to beat the Dobyns Fury line for a combination of quality and being budget friendly. If you're talking 168 s-waver type of size swimbaits then the 735c could work for frogging, jigging in cover, and swimbaiting. However, if you're talking bigger than a 168 s-waver I'd recommend adding the 795 to your arsenal.

Check out the Irod 783sb, 7'8" . I was tossing my 6" hud (2oz) mabye a touch more, and the rod I found had good action, and would cast really well, likely due to the somewhat softer tip. I paired that rod with a Diawa tatlua 200 with 17lb sufix camo. I almost bought the fury, but I prefer the handle on the Irod. I've owned Dobyns swimbait rods in the past, and If I decide to start tossing 8-10" huds, I will likely go with the Irod again.

For frogs and swim or wake baits and glides up to 2 oz the Irod IRG754F Freds Magic stick works good and can be used for jigs, good all around ultilty rod 7'5" fast action.

Heavier swimbaits or Hudd 68 over 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 oz you should use a Heavy swimbait rod rated 1-5 oz mentioned earlier like Dobyns 795SB, Irod Swimbait Jr, Okuma GS Heavy A etc. The Heavy swimbait rods are moderate action and are marginal frog or jig rods... good for larger swimbaits but may be too long at 7'9"-8' and weigh over 6 oz.

What reel and lineare you planning to use?

13 fishing has a budget swimbait rod for big baits aswell
