Help choosing a rod

Featured Replies

I’ve been debating about a Baitcasting setup and decided on the tatula ct for the reel. Now for a rod. Trying to decide between the tatula xt, st Croix bass x, and dobyns colt, or possibly fury. Is the fury worth the extra $ over the colt is my next question?

Fury is worth the $ over the Colt, but of the rods listed, I'd get the Tat, with the St Croix second, the Fury third, and the Colt never.

You didn't mention the SC Mojo Bass but I have one and have been very pleased with it.  I wouldn't think it would be too much more than the Bass X.

Personally, if I were looking at those same options I would go with either the Fury or spend the extra money on a SC Mojo.  I have those and i'm really happy with them so if your budget can allow it I would bump those to the top of your list.

What fury rod is the best “all applications” rod as in top water, crankbaits, square bill, and senkos. Looking for just a good all around rod and I’m just a weekend warrior.

I would say Fury 734 as all purpose but everything you listed was light weight treble hook baits or senko.   If you only throw treble hook baits or senko I'd go with the 3 power fury.

Lionheart, the 734 is a heavy correct? How do I know if I want heavy or medium heavy? I don’t know much about the technical stuff.

I think I just answered my question. Last digit is the power. So 733 is med/heavy, and 734 is heavy. Would 734 be too heavy to be sensitive enough with light baits? I also use a lot of spoons and whopper ploppers in the spring for smallies.

I have the same reel, mounted on a Tatula XT 7' mh. These rods are light, have good action and look good too. I have not tried the St. Croix, or the fury. I did buy a colt, but after 1 1/2 hrs of fishing 8" of the tip broke off. I did look at the fury line, but decided on the XT.

The 734 is a great option as Lionheart mentioned.  Dobyns rods tend to be little lighter than they're rated so a heavy tends to act more like what a Medium-Heavy would be from another company.  I have that rod and it's plenty sensitive for senkos and some of the lighter baits you might wanna throw IMO, I don't use it for anything particularly heavy.

As others have said, a 4 power Dobyns is considered 'heavy' power by only Dobyns.  Really good rods, but the 734 Fury is barely a medium-heavy power.

If you are looking for a rod that does most things well, a Fury 734 would be a nice choice, but a heavy power rod it is not (which is a good thing I think in your situation).

I’ve fished lots of rods from different manufactures and the only one that is way off of what it’s labelled as compared to how it fishes is the dobyns (only 1 rod I’ve fished though) which is a 734. Rated as a heavy rod it is far from heavy. It does have good power but it is a medium heavy at best with a soft tip! Extremely versatile rod and would work well for your application.

The bass x is a nice rod, so is the mojo in 7’1”mh. I prefer the mojo though for baits that I’m fishing the bottom with, like jigs. It’s crisp and transmits the bite very well.

I bought one of the Bass X, I didn't like it. It felt tip heavy to me so I returned it. I ended up buying a Lamiglas XP 704C XP Bass Series rigged with a Fuego CT. If you want a nice rod for a discount deal that is currently on sale for $79 with free shipping. I would highly recommend it.

Anyone else stumble upon the new 6th sense mf’er rods that were just released? It’s another $119 rod.

The XT is a very nice rod. It has the ACS reel seat. Very comfortable. Light Weight too. I have the 7' med hvy. The rod is very versatile and casts excellent.

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on the Shimano exage? A kid at fish USA was telling me he loves the slx paired with the exage. Not to beat a dead horse just cool to hear people’s thoughts before spending money.
