Hey guys so I got a question. I have a new top water rod and reel combo and I want to know what you guys think. I got power and action confused apparently. I got a 7ft Fenwick medium POWER, fast ACTION rod with a lews 6:4.1 gear ratio for popper, jitterbugs, whopper plopper, etc...no frogs. Do you think this is a good choice? I ment to get a medium POWER with a medium ACTION.

I wouldn't toss a Whopper Plopper on anything less than a Medium-Heavy...I use my Heavy for that in fact.

I use medium power for pretty much anything top water that has treble hooks. I also use a 6:4.1 ratio reel to purposefully not reel them in fast so I don’t rip the trebles out. I just want to know what people think about that rod power and action because most people use medium power and medium action and I accidentally got a medium power and fast action 

I use a 7' M/F with 20lb braid and a 8.1 reel for spooks, 75/90/110 ploppers. The 130 requires a heavier rod but I use the same rod and line as I do my frog rod (7' 3" H/F, 50lb Smackdown).

 

I much prefer the braid/fast action rod combination because I get bit and just reel into the fish and the fast tip helps dig the hooks quicker than a moderate or moderate-fast. Once the hooks start to dig, I sweep and reel. Very few fish come off that way.

 

I use a different rod for poppers, a 7' rod is a pain to fish a popper with IMO.

You should be just fine using that rod , as Bluebasser86 said above use a sweep set & reel fast when he has the bait. I am not a big fan of braid & use a faster reel & copoly line. The sweep set compensates for the stretch in the line & the pick up speed of the reel keeps the fish pinned. 

I prefer fast tips. My med tip rods sit on the bench.

fast tips can do double duty with single hooks too, what's not to love?

But I only throw the 110..
