swimbait on swingheads

Featured Replies

any of you guys ever slow roll swimbaits on a swinghead? Started doing this last year since several of the tournaments i fish you can't throw a-rigs. tied one on for a little while last weekend and caught a few good keeper fish. I kinda figured this would be a northern thing where goby's are active but it can straight whack em on deeper clear lakes here in east tn. Never really seen anyone else throw them like this before and wanted to get some input

Yes ~ For an 'open hook' presentation, I use a 3/0 or 4/0 Owner Jungle Flippin' Hook.

It’s thin & stout, has a decent keeper and is just about perfect for this.

Hey A-Jay

Why do you use a split ring on your swing heads? Extra movement?

Thx

Yes - That and the knot gets a little less beat up

You find your knots get beat up from dragging, and the extra lit length from the split  ring save the knots from wearing?

I started using  swing heads for the first time this season for SMB in light weights like 3/16 and 5/16. I was using them mostly on pretty smooth bottoms with light gravel/sand and didn't notice much line wear. I guess if the bottom was more rough it would beat up your line more.

My Tungsten head of choice is this one ~

I can get in bulk and it's a bit of a diffrent design.

A split ring on the front also keep the head from 'sliding up' and pinching the line / knot.

Got it. It's a little different design than I have. I see your point. Thank you.

I bought a few 1/4oz Wave Jigs with various shad based skirts from Siebert just for this application. The quality you expect and still on sale at $2.39, it almost felt like stealing them!

the pic in my original post is a 1/2 oz strike king swing head, the hook isnt the best shape and you cant remove the swinghead from them. IDK i prefer to throw the 1/2 oz anyways since it can be slung a country mile and use heavier line

Works in dirty water too when bass start pulling up prespawn as the grass and pads are just beginning to grow.

I like throwing swimbaits on those Owner Pivot Head Jigs. I found a bunch on clearance a few years ago in all sizes, its a good shape for swimming or dragging.

Those new Z-Man swing jigs are actually pretty good. I like a silver head for lighter weight for some reason, actually I like all the Z Man swimbait jigheads.....

I feel like I miss too many strikes on the Freedom stuff, strike king swim jig with worm hook...I like to simply peg a weight of my choice, put a punch skirt on, and then add a swimbait...Basically the same action, can just add a ring to hook if really want more swing, I just leave a little space between hook and weight.

I have a hard time keeping the Freedom Jigs from rolling on the side etc...I am more familiar with what fits on what size hook and bullet weight....
