Need help choosing a Daiwa Tatula for topwater

Featured Replies

Okay guys, I need some honest opinions. I'm looking for a new reel for my topwater rod. I'll be throwing walk the dogs. I have it narrowed down to three choices. Daiwa tatula CT Type R, Daiwa tatula 100 (2019), or the Daiwa tatula SV. What do you guys recommend and why please help?

What factors are important to you for this application?

For me, I recommend Tatula.  Doesn't matter which.   I walk spooks with the rod.

Mainly its I can get any of the 3 I listed for roughly $10 apart in price. Just wondering which is the best reel for the money?

I have Tatuka's in the Fuego, CT 100, 150 and 200, like chop said, you really can't go wrong with any of them.

Then I would go for the SV..

I would go with a tatula ct that can be had for like 88 bucks on the auction site.  I think the sv is kinda pointless if ur throwing big heavy baits and want distance. The 100 is nice but I prefer the ct myself. If u want a reel that can do other things well like skipping docks etc. Then the sv may be what u want but in my experience the ct absolutely is the better long casting reel

Fuego Ct is another great option if you want to save a few more dollars. In my opinion, that's all you'd need.

I'm with you. I have two. I think they're great reels. A pleasure to fish with. They do nicely with light weights too. They do most of what any of the CT variants can do. Day to day, I think I like the Fuego more than any reel I own.

The way I see it, it's quite simple really. If you can afford the SV, get it. Otherwise the CT will do the trick.

I would go with the Tat SV. For me, hardbaits can get tricky to throw sometimes. The SV spool helps manage potential backlashes. You may get 5-10 more yards with the others, but top waters for me are all about target casting, especially near shorelines or structure.

I've got CT's, a CT Type R, and a Fuego CT. IMO The Tatula CT's aren't worth the upgrade over the Fuego. I like the T-wing but that's all you get, and since I use braid to leader a lot the T-wing can be a pain at times. The SV is probably where you see the biggest payback cause of the spool.

I too have a Fuego, type R and the CT's I listed above. I don't use leaders, as a result I use 17 to 20 lb mono on my 200 Tatula to throw 6" Huddelstons, ect..I find the T wing shines in this case. I have heard that T wings and leaders don't play to well together, but I would say the CT's are better IF you don't use a leader, at least in my case.

Yea if you go straight line no leader I do like the T-wings a lot. I also have a Tatula HD200 and fish 20lb copoly for swimbaits and it BOMBS lures. For me though, I don't feel the little extra distance it might give is worth it usually. But you can find Tatula CT's on sale on Ebay almost any day of the week so usually it's a no brainer to upgrade.

Just curious, which rod are you using for your swimbaits..?

I've got it on a Dobyns Fury 795 right now, I really like that combo, balances well and the 200 size reel doesn't feel too small with the 20lb line. I'm fishing treble hook baits 1-4oz on it.

Nice..I use the Irod 783sb, rated 1 to 4 oz, rod is really light and like yours, it balances really nice with the 200.

I agree re: the 20 lb line.

For me the CT Type R wouldn't make the list.  To me it is an ugly looking reel.  I much prefer my OG Tatula Type R.  Thankfully to each his own.  I am sure it is just as good as mine in the casting department.  Never handled a 100.  I like the looks and performance of the Tatula SV.  The SV spool has its advantages, but you should get better distance from the other reels...if that is important to you.

How much distance I couldn't say.  Never tested them.  I feel I get enough with the SV.  Reel size is relatively unimportant to me.  The 100 is suppose to be the smallest if that is important to you.
