Garmin 4 fishfinder

Featured Replies

I was looking to get this fish finder for my kayak.  I see it on Amazon for $99, as well as BPS.

I read some reviews on Amazon where users said that this fish finder is NOT waterproof.  You are completely surrounded by water, and who doesn't fish in the rain?!

Can anyone confirm this?  Is it really not waterproof?

Which is what I was thinking too.

But if I go up to the next model which is another $40, that states that it is waterproof. (Garmin Striker Plus 4)

The reviews mentioned that the screen/buttons were not waterproof.

The Garmin STRIKER 4 has an IPX7 rating which means it can withstand being submerged 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.

As 12poundbass stated, maybe it was a fluke.  The review mentioned having to cover it with a ziplock baggy when it rained.

Thank you for that clarification Tennessee.

I've owned the Striker Plus 4 for two summers now. I keep it under cover because if it get wet the inside of the screen gets fogged up and you can't see it. It has dried out as it only happened once. Now I put it away or put a zip lock bag on it and partially zip it shut at the bottom.

I contacted Garmin directly, and here is what they told me:

IPX7 Suitable:
  • Mounting on vehicles (e.g. boat, motorcycle, bike, ATV, golf cart)
  • Splashes
  • Rain or snow
  • Incidental exposure to water of up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
