Which Swimbait RodTo Buy?

Featured Replies

So I am going to try swimbait fishing this year. Never done it before but it looks like something I will like, as long as the bass also like it.

I have a River2Sea S-Waver 168, a Jackall Gantarel Jr., a few big Zipper Worms, and I might put a few soft ones in there like a Trash Fish or similar.

For a reel I intend to use a Shimano Cardiff 300 but because I haven't done this before, I am unsure which of these two rods is most appropriate:

  • Dobyns Fury 795SB
  • Dobyns Fury  806SB

Which seems best suited to the lures I listed? I'm also open to trying a different rod if the performance is the same or better for similar or less money. I'm not trying to get into anything premium right now in case the technique isn't for me.

Thoughts? Thanks!

For the baits you've mentioned, the 795 is a good choice. That's what I use and I throw similar sized baits with it.

That was my original plan, but I read and watch way more guys using and talking about the 806.

Since you use the 795, does it have plenty of backbone? Or is it like a heavy weight crankbaits rod where it kind of just keeps giving?

The 806 will throw a 6" hud a good distance, however, when you get into lighter baits, say under 2 oz, the 806 is a bit to much imho..The 795 would be better suited if you intend on throw anything less than less 2 oz.

From what you describe, I agree with NortrhernBasser on the rod selection.

It has more than enough power for the baits you listed. I'm 100% happy with it.

Ok, the only reason I asked is because I am going to be around a lot of cover that I need to get the fish away from. And I'm also using some big 9/0-11/0 Beast Hooks on some big plastics.

Thanks!

Yessir. It does just fine in those scenarios.

I know the regular med/heavy Fury's are softer than other companies' med/heavy. Don't let that deter you from their med/heavy swimbait rod. Not the case here.

Either way, I don't want a broomstick if I'm also throwing trebles. Not saying the 806 is a broomstick, but it's definitely heavier than the 795, obviously.

Right on, just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting myself into a noodle rod that can huck 5oz baits. Lolz

795 is amazing for that 1-3oz range, and can toss 4oz baits in a pinch. I've never fished the 806 but I hear it's a more versatile rod if you plan to upsize in the future to bigger baist, you just loose that lower end below 2oz. The rods have some overlap.

I can't imagine I will exceed 2.5 oz. I'm mainly planniing to throw oversized plastics and 1-2 oz hard bodies.

I'd stick with the 795 then..I had a 806, and as I said in another thread, it will toss a 6" hud, which is 2.3 oz..IIRC.
