I have a couple of extra spools for some of my reels. I'm putting FC on one, braid on the other so I can carry them with me and "hot swap" them from reel to reel if I needed to. I am trying to figure out what to sort of carry them in. My boat is fairly small so I do not have infinite storage options. Originally I was thinking about something like a medicine bottle like you pick up a prescription at the drug store but a larger sized one. Maybe put something in it like a cut up towel to provide it cushion. Then again, if I were to put it up wet it may rust or something. IDK, just looking for options and ideas here.

I keep mine in a cloth bag inside of a gallon ice cream container.  Several years now no problems.

Mine go in used Extra sugar free gum plastic containers. Recycling plastic to a good use.

 

 

Many, many years ago I carried spare spools with me for quite a while, then one realized I never used them, so they now they sit in a drawer at home empty.   After years of reel changes I am now down to three spare empty spools and they all for spinning reels.

I keep spare spools in my car and occasionally on my person if I’m going on a long hike so I can keep fishing in the event of an oops.  I felt like a chump paying 8 bucks for the actual spool holders so I looked around and found some little plastic screw top jars that perfectly fit a 34mm Daiwa spool with enough room for a little foam padding top and bottom. 
 

The issue is now I can’t remember where I bought them from, I checked both my Amazon and eBay histories and don’t see them and I cannot figure out where else I would’ve bought them from. But they are out their and at some point I’ll spend an afternoon hunting around again.

I got fumble fingers.   When I'm messing with a reel in my fishing shed and I drop something, it bounces on the gravel.  Then, either I find it & pick it up, or I got to go get the magnet to help find it, or it is lost for a while.  If I'm messing with a reel on the water and I drop something, good chance it will hit the deck, one bounce and into the H2O it goes.  Not cool.   I've stopped carrying spare spools on the boat.   Mess up a reel and it goes into time out til I can get back to the fishing shed & fix it.

Back in the day, when I was a meat fishing bush hippie, I carried spare spools for my spinning reels (I only fished spinning reels then ) ,  but I only used them once or twice a year.   Price of mono was important enough to me to keep track of line condition on a cast to cast basis.   I carried 4 spare spools - a couple spare spools of 6 lb test and an upgrade of 8 and 10.   If I was out fishing and had to change spools it was generally because I wanted to upgrade to 8 or 10 lb line. For a few years my mode of operation was a couple of rods (in the beginning both the same, later on, slightly different actions) with the same reel, the old Garcia Mitchell 300.   I still have one of those reels.   It has an honored place on my desk where I fiddle with it from time to time. Wouldn't consider ever fishing with it again.

Oh  yeah, the original question was how did I store the spare spools?  Each spool was packaged in a snack size zip lock bag and all four fit in a smallish plastic box in my tackle sack.

I only have 4 spare baitcasting spools, I keep them in a small plastic bag, in my desk drawer. They get used as needed.

If I want to take out 1 or 2 extra spools or don't have room, I'll use different size pill bottles with foam on each side/ in between spools. Otherwise, I took a dremel to a plano case, cut out the dividers and then cut a piece of foam to separate the spools and keep them in one place. A bit crude looking but it works well. I just couldn't have my spools moving around banging into each other or the case. Daiwa spools can be expensive, haha.

Thats nice. Nothin crude about it. I think that will work great for my spinning spools. And i have dremels, and access to any type foam....

I brought my spare spool with me when I picked up my meds. I asked if they had a bigger bottle to fit. She said no problem and asked how many I wanted. No charge

Thanks! Yeah, I had all the materials and tools at work. Just needed the case.
