hook wear

Featured Replies

How often do you guys find your hooks getting dull from bouncing off the bottom, especially if it is rocky, using crank bait lures/setups? Do you not notice this much, or is the hook quality a big factor?

What are your thoughts?

Any hook point regardless of manufacture, that consistently rub’s on rock, wood etc for any length of time will dull.

Actually just one time can be enough.
Alway check your point if fishing in and around that kind of structure more often.

I feel mine occasionally to check for sharpness. I have a small compartment in the boat with nothing but replacement trebles in it and swap them out whenever it's needed.

Treble hooks have 3 points it's rare all 3 are dull. The bill usually protects the points from hitting rocks.

Single hooks on jigs are more of a problem getting flattened by hitting rocks.

I am anal about checking line for abrasion and hook points for sharpness.

PS, keep an eye on the treble hook points that rubs the lures sides.

I keep a small ceramic sharpener to touch up my hooks if needed.
