Hey fellow fisherman, im new to the site but ive been lurking around here for years. I mostly fish bass and pike up here in Canada.

I currently have the chance of buying a NRX rod for 420 usd BUT i just recently bought a legend elite (still have tags on it) for 300 usd that i could bring back. My question is, is the NRX worth 420$? should i bring back my legend elite to get the NRX? The legend elite i have is the 7’mhf and i intend to use it for jigs so id be getting the 7’1 mhf NRX for the same application. I am mostly a st croix guy, i love their build quality and costumer service. Thanks for the help

Oh, i almost forgot, im talking about the baitcaster rod. 

It's worth it for the NRX in my opinion. I think Loomis are all pretty much overpriced for the performance, but the NRX is something special. And I've bought two Legend Elites this month, so it's not a bias thing. The NRX is just a better rod.

But is it $120 better than the elite? That's the question, if you're answering based on full retail then your answer still stands.

Unless you're looking for a specific action that the Elite offers and NRX doesn't, then it's worth the money for me. The Elite is very sensitive and typically better built (though the 7' MF casting rod I got this week has crooked guides) but the blanks aren't that close, in my experience. The NRX just feels electric.

so let me ask you this, would i be better off spending that extra money on a better reel (i have curado dc right now) or keeping my curado dc and getting the nrx?

Curado DC is a really good reel.

Coming from a huge fan of St. Croix, the NRX is worth it. I just got my first few about a year ago after upgrading from some IMX Pros, and I'm impressed. They're my bottom contact rods, texas rigs and jigs. 

 

 I still fish with all my St. Croix rods as well, and actually my favorite rod in my arsenal is probably my Legend Glass, mainly because I love crankbait fishing over most other techniques. 

 

 

I have both the rods you are looking at and both are great but the NRX is by far my favorite.  The St.Croix is well built, sensitive and a bit more stout.  The NRX is lighter and more sensitive.  

 

Is it worth the extra cost?  Maybe but when it comes to rod sensitivity, it's very subjective and the law of diminishing returns is definitely a factor to consider with your purchase.

 

If it were me, I would go with the NRX for sure.  My only complaint about this rod is that it doesn't load as well as I like for long casts but it's like a magic wand at everything else.  Its definitely a pleasure to fish.

any comments on the recoil guides and build quality compared to the legend elite?

It all depends, the NRX is a sensitive and light blank, but it's built like a 100 dollar Chinese rod.

 

People have Rose colored glasses with the NRX rods for whatever reason.

 

They are the most underwhelming of all the higher end rods, the bent in a round shape paper clip guides are also laughable.

 

LOOMIS GLX or Shimano Conquest if you want to stay under the shimano  umbrella, both are solid choices.

 

The legend elite is also extremely nice.

In a way the build quality may be better on the Legend Elite but not by much.  

 

As far as the guides go, I like the recoil guides.  I think and this is just a guess, that they are what makes the rods just a little bit more sensitive.  I am not a huge fan of braid but if memory serves me right, if you torque down on the rod with braid the recoil guides can groove.  I would hope they have improved this over the years.  Also, I can't recall anyone ever saying this happened on the NRX rods.

yeah ive read that the build quality isn’t that great

Elite and NRX owner here and would say get the NRX cause if you dont you will always wonder if you should have and then wind up getting one anyways.

If you can look it over before you buy shouldnt be an issue with the build cause you check for any issues then. If you have to order it make sure they have a good return policy if not satisfied. NRX holds value as well could fish it a year or two and sell it for $360 or so.

might aswell order it and return the one i dont like

3/8 oz jigs or below, NRX. Half ounce is "fine" but not ideal. Where the 853c really shines is Senkos and Ikas, IMO.

The legend elite is a better build in general. Sensitivity wise your really splitting hairs, One won't catch a fish the other wouldn't have. There is also some deals to be had on last years xtreme. Some folks don't care for the handle but I like it

I personally never could never love the 85 inch NRX but I did like the 853 more so than the 854.

In my experience this is very try. GLX and Conquest have been decent builds and the nrx has not been. Elite is a very nice rod but not on nrx sensitivity level. I am trying out a few Daiwa Steez AGS rods in place of nrx. NRX is a great rod but QC is not there for it. Still fish a lot of Loomis rods and enjoy them though.

I think a 3/8 oz jig with trailer is too much for my 853c. I plan on getting an 873crr soon to throw 3/8 and 1/2 jigs with trailer.
