A choice of Jigs, decisions decisions...

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I fish many pressured bodies of water up here in the Tri-state northeast and I'm interested in getting some new jigs. I was looking at some of the packages that Sieberts has such as the dredge dock rocker jigs, but I realized that for the next couple of weeks the fishing will probably be still very slow and the fish usually don't start to bite more until mid may, should I pick up some finesse jigs instead of the standard size Sieberts package right now? Or should I just get the standard size jigs and try them out? I would get both options but I can't right now do to money reasons.

If I instead get some finesse jigs what would be some brands you guys recommend? I look forward to the response!

Hey TriState,

I absolutely love the dredge dock rocker jigs and they may work fine this time of year or anytime for that matter.  Siebert has a finesse jig called the Sniper which would work great if you are looking to downsize.  I haven’t found a firm rule that a finesse jig is always best in Spring.  I always have a couple different jigs tied on to see what the fish want.  Often times a finesse jig works best.  Often times they work best in summer or fall as well.  Either way, Sieberts makes great jigs.

Good luck!!

Can you please send me a link to the sniper jigs? I've been searching sieberts and couldn't find them! Thanks!!

I have only gotten out a few times this year so far, my biggest fish of the year so far is a little over 4lbs. Also have caught two more close to 4lbs, all on a Siebert Arky jig regular size. The water here is 48-50, if that tells you anything. Siebert jigs are actually the only ones I use, they are top notch!

I just placed I order with Siebert a couple days ago and didn't see the Sniper either. He does have the Dredge Arky which is a smaller profile 1/8 jig. I really like the Improved Arky Jig which is what most of my order consisted of this time. If your undecided you can always contact him on here or FB and see what he suggest. I know he's put together a few bundles for others before.

For a off the shelf small profile jig I really like the little Strike King Bitsy Bug jigs. They're like $2 each and the bass love them.

I'm a fan of the BOSS Gary Klein Original Flipping Jig and Finesse Flip.  Awesome jigs, after you slide a BOSS skirt on them they're less than $2.50 each.

If you hit the little 3 bars menu in the top left of the page, go to jigs, and they are on page 3.   They even have some blemishes for $2.50 which is $.85 off normal price.

Netbait Tiny Paca Chunk and the Havoc Pit Boss Jr are my two favorites. Small profile and a lot of action.

I'll check those trailers out, how has the fishing been down in south jersey? up here in Bergen we haven't been able to fish anywhere due to quarantine

Most places are closed off but live about 1/2 mile from the Delaware and have two creeks that run off of there within a mile from my house so that's where I've been. Just bank fishing though. It's been rough with the water temp still being low and the way the weathers been hasn't helped. Most of my bass have come off that bitsy bug/paca chunk, jerkbaits and Fat Ika's. Caught a few snakeheads on spinnerbaits. Hopefully things get better in the next few weeks.

BOSS also sells jig skirts.  You can find them on tacklewarehouse in the lure components section.

Do they sell finesse skirts? that's what I was referring too lol

I wouldn't be afraid to throw a regular sized jig.  I've caught the majority of my bass so far on 3/8 oz jigs that I make myself.  If I didn't make them, I'd most definitely purchase from Sieberts.

You can cut the skirt as finesse as you choose.  I've tried the finesse cuts and quickly moved away from it, but to each his own.

The pressured ponds I fish don't have very big bass. 75% are either 1/2lb or below. There's definitely some 3lbs to 4lbs in there but the likelihood of catching one is very low.

My favorite trailer for a Strike King Bitsy Bug jig is a Baby Rage Craw shortened by 2 segments. Nice compact jig. I also like the Baby Rage Menace and Rage Ned Bug.

I've been throwing some 3/8th sized jigs recently specifically the Terminator Pro Series flipping jig, they don't want nothing to do with that so I'm investing into downsizing lol

I see.  The last time I was out, I used a 3/8 oz jig and caught 3 fish on it, all 13" or under.  Just food for thought.  You can trim the skirt length down to make a more compact package on a bigger jig to make it more of a finesse deal.

Barlows Tackle sells everything needed for jigs including molds.

The least expensive jigs with Owner or Gamakatsu hooks is Yamamoto using his Hula Skirt grubs twin tails. If you want to catch bass using a jig this is a excellent choice, simple and effective. You are not going to fish finesse jigs in heavy cover so a spider worked along breaks, rocks or sparse cover is where pre spawn bass are located, they may not be in heavy cover until after the spawn.

Yeah that's what I've been doing. They still don't really want anything to do with it, but the last time I went fishing was a month ago hahaha. The water temps were around 45 and the ponds I fish are very pressured.

Can't go wrong with a bitsy bug and a chigger craw or paca chunk trailer.  Especially if you're new to the technique.

You’ve got lots of great suggestions here but I just wanted to add this. If you want a jig with a heavy wire hook but with a finesse cut skirt, then the War Eagle Heavy Finesse Jigs are a good choice. They aren’t really truly finesse but I believe the skirt has 50 strands and they come in 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz. Also has a short shank 3/0 flipping hook so if you’re in heavy cover this may be better than a true finesse jig like a bitsy bug.

Theres also the Santone Finesse jigs that fall into this category of “finesse but not actually finesse” and they make jigs as light 3/16 oz (if you feel that the 3/8 oz from war eagle is too heavy).

I fish a lot of pressured ponds also bitsy bugs are good and you can get away with your spinning rod. And if you wanna use your heavy rod and braid id probably go with the bitsy flip. It has a heavier hook and comes in heavier weights, don't remember but they may have a stiffer weed guard

Honestly for the pressued ponds I seem to do better with a shakey head.  Or more likely a Texas rig soft bait.  don't want to turn you away from jig fishing but these are almost the same, fun is feeling the bite and setting the hook
