Ringed EWG Hooks

Featured Replies

First heard of them today reading a couple articles.  I see that VMC and Gammy both offer them.  Aside from using as components of Tokyo or Jika rigs, does anyone sue them for 'regular' t-rigging? The argument is that the freedom of movement allows for better (or just easier?) grass fishing.

Sort of makes sense...maybe...lol

I guess I could experiment with a split ring, but that might just catch on the weeds.  Anyone use ringed ewg's for their T-rigs?

Would the bullet weight rest against the ring?

I suppose.   But, while I haven't watched much underwater video, I have always sensed that the unpegged weight and the hook are often separated....though maybe not when working through grass.

I got some spare Owner Oval rings sitting around...might just try one of those to give this a shot.

Seen a video yesterday with Seth Fieder and he was saying he uses those hooks for fishing grass all the time.  He said they let the bait fall straight more than just a normal hook.  I don't recall all of his explanation of it but I seen the video on w2Fish if you want to check it out.  He was talking about his five usual setups for fishing grass.

Yes.  That's where I saw it.  I read the transcript or notes from that...I don't have the patience for videos most of the time.....I probably should have watched it...lol.   A quick google led me to another article where he mentioned them again....got me to thinking - I also wonder if hooksets might be negatively affected.

I bought 1 pack to try...not for Texas rigging but for fishing flukes.  I use ringed hooks sometimes in Saltwater when fishing live bait to get a more natural presentation...I thought about the same logic for fishing flukes for Stripers.  Is there a difference?  The only way I could see a slight difference is when I used a heavy leader (20lb +).  It was not worth the extra money as I didn't feel like it got me extra bites.  I went back to my normal style EWG hooks.

From what he said he feels he gets better hooksets, he is a much better fisherman than I so usually when some of those guys speak I listen!

I dont see why you couldn't use a split ring - that's what you do with a jika rig.

Can't speak to t-rigging but i bought 3 sizes of these hooks over the winter and have been fishing them all year, originally bought them with jika rigging in mind and it works pretty good but will probably stick to the owner twistlocks just for bait longevity. I discovered another outstanding use for them which is bubba/power/flip-shotting, tie to ring, tie your short dropper with weight. I find it to be a cleaner simpler rigging and less prone to tangling than the vmc powershot hooks which are actually designed for that purpose, and I have had no issues with line twist. Probably going to try t-rigging with them now too.
