Did you keep a good tension on the line while spooling it up? Braid can dig into itself if it's even slightly loose, thereby causing a loop to be under another loop - which would cause it to pause with light lures.

Pull the line off - about 50 yds or so, then re-wind it on with some good tension...running the line through the last pages of a thick, heavy book while reeling it on the spool is one way to do this.

I never 'hand hold' braid when I'm spooling it...to hold it tight enough, you'd end up with 'thread burns' on your fingers.

Line twist can be a factor - did you spool it on the reel in the same direction it came off the source?

how do i know if i have line twist?

Sometimes new braid can be a little sticky, I'm guessing from whatever they use to color it. Some brands are way worse than others. Try using the rod with a cast and retrieve lure for a bit and see if you can get some quick miles on it to break it in. I wouldn't think line twist is the issue with freshly spooled braid even if you did it completely backwards (however MN Fisher is far more experienced than me with spinning equipment so he could very well be right).

If when you pull line off the spool and it seems to turn on it's own while hanging limp - you got twist. Same cure as loosely spooled - pull a good length off and re-wind it on the spool letting the free end turn as it wants. Might have to undo some minor tangles before it gets to your tension weight (that book mentioned earlier).

to spool my line, my question is when i spool the line from the new line should the line be coming out of the top or bottom? thanks and is line lub a must to spool line or u dont need it?

Okay - that's part of the problem right there. You're using a station designed for a baitcaster to spool up a spinning reel and that'll contribute to line twist.

Here's a vid that @Glenndid on how to properly spool up a spinning reel.

it shows it can use it on a spinning reel isnt it?

They do show that - but to keep line twist off spinning reels, you really need to spool it free-form. Wind the line on the reel the same way it comes off the source. Pulling line off the source the way those stations set it up will add twist to the line on the reel.

so i brought the thing for nothing? so its useless to me since i use spinning reel i have to do the old fashion method?

  • Super User

Yep - which is how I've been spooling up spinning reels for over 50 years, ever since I got a Garcia-Mitchell 320 as a Christmas gift in 1967. Still do it the same way today with my new Pfluegers.

Is your station spinning like in this video if so it shouldnt be twist related.

Oh OK the link you posted is for the one that attaches to the rod and spins like in the video I posted.

yep i guess i used wrong, the table method is for casting reel and the one attach to the rod is the only method for spinning reel. for the new lines should the new line come out front/back and top or bottom? thanks  dont want to screw ths up again.

I install line off the bulk spool so it matches the spool on the reel. After filling, I head out back to my fence where I have a screw hook installed about 5’ high. I attach a ball bearing snap swivel and run a hook through the ring, turn the anti-reverse off and back up slowly (don't let the reel unwind fast- control it under slight tension) about 45-50 yards. Turn off the AR. If mono, pull back and apply some good tension (drag should not engage) and hold it for 2-3 minutes. Then reel the line back in slowly under tension until you walk back to the snap swivel. That really allows you to remove all line twist, and if mono, a lot of memory.

Your braid line is already on the spinning reel spool and it doesn't come off when opening the bail using a drop shot rig....right?

I take it you fish from a boat otherwise you wouldn't be dropping straight down.

Simply run the line behind the boat without anything tied on and drag it at no wake speed for a few hundred yards. While the boat is still moving forward reel in the line.

The line is now untwisted if it was and back on the spool with the right tension.
