Help I submerged my spinning reel!

Featured Replies

Hey I am new to fishing and I recently got a size 30 pfluger president spinning reel. I did not realize it was not ok for the reel to stay submerged in water. I live by a freshwater lake and I was fishing with my whole reel submerged underwater for about ten minutes. Now when I reel in after a cast the reel will sometimes get stuck and it will also only thread the line in the middle of the spool not evenly. Any suggestions on what to do? Should I take the whole reel apart? Should I take all the line out and reel it back in? Do I need to oil anything in the reel? Thank you guys if you can help sorry I am kind of dumb.

If anyone has anything that might be helpful to me please tell me thanks.

Casting on a spinning reel doesnt involve mechanical parts. Strip the line and respool, it sounds like a line issue more than anything.

Opening up and cleaning/lubricating would be best if youre comfortable enough to do so.

If you can't tear it down, clean it, relube it and put it back together find someone local to do it or contact DVT on this site.

To start, pull the handle and cap, remove the drag knob and lay it in the sun or inside on a towel to dry. Put a few drops of oil on each bearing in the side plates, oil the line roller, grease the drag knob and reinstall. That should get you through the season, then send it in for deep cleaning. Let me know if you see symptoms. The line lay has nothing to do with getting wet. Just pull off a bunch of line and reel it back on.

For a SPINNING reel, take the spool off and take the handle off.  Lay it on it's side on a table in the sun to drain the water that may be inside the reel and dry.  If it's not back to normal after that I would send it in for a lube job.

I guess I gotta be the guy to ask the obvious question......Why?

Why were you fishing with your reel underwater for 10 minutes? This is just weird.........

New Japanese technique? Reel shotting... Texas reel rig. SOUTH Carolina rig...

I can understand how it happens as a creek wading fisherman. Several times I have been in chest deep water and having to hold the rod n reel in my teeth to swim across a deep spot. All part of the fun ?
