Dobyns 734 vs 733

Featured Replies

Hello, its been a while since ive posted on here but i'm looking into buying my first dobyns baitcasting rod and have a few questions i'm hoping someone help with. I'm currently looking at the fury series, specifically the 733 and 734. I will mainly be throwing texas rigged worms and creature baits with either a 1/8 or 3/16 bullet weight. I've handled both at the store and i cant decide which one would rod would be best. I see the 734 is recommended a lot here on the forums as a good all around bass rod, but it seemed to be a little more on the heavy side and i'm wondering if maybe the 733 would be better for what i plan on using it for? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe that the median of weight ratings is known as the sweet spot or where rods perform the best.

Fr 733 weight rating 1/4-3/4oz, sweet spot should be around 1/2 oz.

Fr 734 weight rating 1/4-1oz, sweet spot should be around 5/8 oz.

3/8 (approx weight of 5" stick worm)+3/16 = 0.5625 or 9/16, so I'm thinking FR733 considering that you will also use 1/8.

It has been pointed out to me that Fury line fishes lighter than ratings.

I have a ABU vengeance H/F and a Dobyns FR735 which is listed as Mag/H by comparison the Dobyns feels like a MH and the ABU a broom stick.

734 is always the answer to this question

I have the 733 Fury. I have not fished the 734 but I know that a 1/8 oz. weight plus a plastic bait feels like it is on the lighter end of what I'm comfortable with on the 733. Not to go against the stock answer of "734," but I would lean toward the 733 for your anticipated use.

733 starts feeling overloaded once you get to 3/8oz + trailer.

Then the OP should be fine with the 733 since he will be using 1/8 oz. or 3/16 oz. plus trailer.

They will both cover the weights the 733 maybe even better, but with these two rods I make my decision based on if more single stout hook applications will be fished or will there be treble baits used.  I prefer the 733 for the treble and the 734 for single hook.

I own them both and for your intended purpose the 733 will be the better rod.  the 734 is also a nice rod but i don't like it for texas rigs unless they are in the weight being 3/8 oz range

Thank you all for your input. Like I stated, i typically will fish soft plastics with a 3/16 weight but occasionally i'll throw smaller jigs, or smaller spinnerbaits...seems like both rods would do the job, it just might come down to personal preference.

I have a Kaden 743, Fury 734 and Sierra 734. For 3/8 and 1/2 oz, the 734s are definitely the ticket. The 743 Kaden feels great with 1/4 and 5/16. 3/8 is doable but I would not go over 3/8 without switching to a 4 power Dobyns.

I read somewhere from Gary himself stated how useful a 733c. was for throwing a variety of techniques - weightless Senkos and Flukes being two of his favorites along with 3/16th oz - 1/4 oz. jigs , along with shaky heads in the same weight range when you want to step up from a M/F spinning rod .

I also own both.

If you are throwing lighter baits, the 733 loads a lot better on the cast. It also has better sensitivity with light baits.

With the 733 I generally use light or medium guage hooks for Texas rigs.

If I want to step up to heavier hooks I will step up to the 734.

^^THIS^^

I would personally go with the 733 being a Northern guy and fishing for smallies also.

Guys down South would probably prefer the 734 as they usually deal with bigger fish and usually don't have any smallies down there. I've had the Fury 703 and Champion 734 and found the 3 power more versatile for my style of fishing and being a Northern guy.

If you're going to use to it mostly for bottom baits though, I would consider waiting for a sale or saving more money and getting a Kaden, Sierra, Champion, something with a bit more sensitivity.
