Skirtless buzzbait

Featured Replies

I've thrown a buzzbait for a long time but I've always just thrown a skirt...also never even used a trailer. How many of you guys are taking the skirt off and just going with a piece of plastic instead? I know a lot of guys use a horny toad or something similar but what else do you thread on? Any favorite buzzbait for this?

I throw one with a toad pretty often. It's considerably heavier and makes casting in the wind or into tight spots easier. The one I use is one of the Hack Attack buzzbaits from Academy.

The YUM Tip Toad works really well, comes in lots of colors, is really durable, and very affordable.

This is the video that actually got me curious about what plastics guys are using on a buzzbait

I was wondering this myself actually as I have a hard time deciding on whether to use a trailer or just keep the skirt to itself. Thanks for the vid!

Ive read about this here and elsewhere and also seen guys doing it on tv but as much as I love throwing buzzbaits I just can't get myself to try this. Maybe because just a skirt works fine for me and I don't see anyone catching more or bigger fish doing this as far as I know. Also because I always use a trailer hook and I'm not sure they would work with a toad.

I tried for the first time this year finally. Been behind on ordering one.  I would recommend ordering one with toad already on it as they are specifically tuned for it.  I tried putting various trails on my own myself and none of them swam right.

First trip a Pike took one of my toad tails but I still caught a small fish shortly after that.  And this Sunday I had three misses with Horny Toad on which what ironic given I just watched that G-Man video the night before.  Does cast extremely well though.  I might have to try that style of trailer see if I get fewer misses.  If not I will have to go back to standard buzzbait.

I think the idea with the toad is it gives the fish more of a clear target and so you would not even need a trailer hook since short strikes should be reduced.  I rarely ever see pros fish skirted buzzbaits anymore and its almost always a black one.

I like the horny toad or the zoom z craw as swindle suggested. Horny toad seems to draw bigger bites but not as many as the z craw.

As far as plastic trailer vs skirted trailer, it seems to be pretty situational for me. I like the toad towards the fall when the fish are more aggressive. Seem to do better with a skirt during the summer months, but it could just be me.
