What G. Loomis NRX would be like a SC LE 68 MXF?

Featured Replies

Hey guys what model NRX would be like a SC LE/LX/Xtreme in the 68-610 MXF size?

Thanks in advance,

Randy

It's kind of between the 802 and 803. Closer to 803, imo.

How do the tips compare, do you think the NRX is as fast as the SC

SC is faster, but not by a lot. The NRX Jwr rods are pretty fast.

I have the NRX JWR 853C casting and a bunch of St.Croix rods in XF and the SC have always seemed just a little faster. was not sure if it was just the 853 or NRX in general.

803 is a little stiff, honestly. Based purely on the numbers, it’s roughly equivalent but it’s just a stiffer, “heavier” rod.

the 802 might be a bit on the light side but it’s going to be much more equivalent, feel-wise.

I have the 853C and the 6'8 LE M Fast.  Based having these two I would say the 802C would be closer.  The 853C is slightly heavier than the LE.   I do love both rods though.  I enjoy fishing the NRX more but I tend to catch more fish with the LE though.  I have yet to figure this out.

Randy just leave the nrx alone or you will end up listing all the Croix's.....I promise :)

@thunderblack, I have SC buddies that also have NRX's and some of them feel the LE's/LX's/ and Xtreme's are on par with the NRX.

I own both as well. All are great fishing sticks! In the sensitivity department....nrx will be your favorite. I prefer my GLX over Xtreme (first gen) for what it's worth. Tight lines

I think the SC offer more bang for the buck in terms of components but if you are going for sensitivity the NRX is still top dog IMHO.

@Heartland, @FishTank, @thunderblackI'm a little torn in that I currently own a few LE's, Xtreme's, and a Legend X.  I believe you when you say the NRX is more sensitive but I also know from going from a SC IV to a SC V graphite the ROI is getting pretty slim.  I wish I had a buddy with a NRX I could try.  I just hate to spend the $$ and realize that with my 55 YO construction hands I can't tell a difference.  Hope that makes sense.

When comparing upper end rods sometimes the difference in sensitivity lies in the hands of the buyer. Looks like you have a bunch of fantastic equipment now, you're not out anything if you decided not to buy anything new.

What are you planning to use it for?

I actually like some of my st croix rods more than my nrx’s. The nrx line is awesome but they’re just not that ergonomic in my hands. Some people say the same for st croix so ymmv. The nrx’s are light and sensitive, absolutely...but it’s not a cut and dried case of “they’re objectively better”.  Like any other rod line, it’s a matter of models and how they work in your hands.

Get the NRX 803 if you fear missing out. You might gain some sensitivity, especially in lighter weights. This is where the 3 power NRX models shine; I don't know if a better 1/8 or 3/16 Texas rod exists. Cold water, straight fluoro, light bites? Forget about it.

However you will lose balance and ergonomics. Recoil guides also bother some people. They're far from perfect rods, which is a shame because they cost just about perfect rod money.

That's funny, I sold all 12 of my NRX rods after I fished a Legend X and Legend elite.

I now have mostly all st croixs from a couple Avid X rods, and then legend X rods to the new Legend xtreme, with a few megabass rods sprinkled in.

Evo, it happens. People make bad decisions :) I love MB and have certain model St. Croix's I enjoy too. Legend X is tempting but for spinning I can't get past the exposed threads and handle and the elite reel seat was my least favorite of any rod I have fished. Just was not comfortable in my hands. St. Croix sure had excellent build quality and CS. Really cant go wrong. Different strokes. Go get that new Xtreme!

Thanks for everyone for their replies.  I'm still on the fence about the NRX purchase.  I hate spending that kind of money and not really noticing much of a difference.  Thanks again.

@FishTank, I would be using it as a bass rod (spinning) for plastic worms.  I've had a lot of luck wacky style.

@Randy Price - I know it’s been a while since this thread was active, but was curious what you went w/ here? I’m highly considering a NRX+ 842 MBR w/ an Aldebaran MGL 50 for next year, unless I decided to go spinning instead. If I did go spinning, the rods discussed in this thread would be of interest. If you could provide an update and any additional feedback, that would be great. Thanks!
