I have 50lb braid on my Daiwa fuego I use for frog fishing. Every time I hook a fish or a fish pulls drag the line digs in. Is there any way to prevent this? This also happens on my topwater rod with 30lb braid but not as bad. Is this normal from just retrieving slack line in between pops of the frog and topwater? Ive read that this is normal and it happens but it’s becoming annoying. I’ve spooled the line tight and properly the first time. 

 

Yes this happens because of retrieving slack line, but it’s never been so much of an issue where I’ve had backlashes or knots. Every once in a while I’ll make a long cast and hold the line in between my fingers to get the line on tight.

Yep, line dig in happens with braid when you reel in slack line and then hook into a good one or get hung up and try to free it. Of course, there are guys here who have NEVER had braid dig into itself. How that is possible is beyond me, but hey, I know guys who have hit 20 hole in ones, just never any witnesses'. 

Retightening the line is a good recommendation. I will say that I very very rarely will ever have I ever have line dig in once I switched all of my reels over to powerpro maxcuatro.

I am not a fan of braid.   I only use it for frog fishing.  I do find braid backlashes easier to untangle than mono.  Braid seems to require more thumb pressure on the cast than mono.  If you attempt to make a long cast with braid and don't thumb the spool correctly, you will have one heck of a mess.   If you load the line under pressure, you can avoid most of these issues. 

Some soft braids get puffy on the spool and will dig no matter what. Thats why i stick with o.g. power pro. Good hard braid. I do want to try sunline fx2. Not a fan of j braid or samurai

That would be fun fishing frog on a lawn, what did you catch? A cat?

Try respooling the reel, and this time do it under some tension.  It helps to keep the line from digging in too far when it does try to dig in.  You still have to keep the line tight while you're casting and reeling under normal circumstances, but I find that keeping the bottom portion of the spool really tight limits how deep the line will dig into the spool, and causes less problems. 

 

With braid, I don't change out line but once every few years.  But I'll have to respool the line every few months to keep it tight and even.  I like to use an empty saltwater reel for that, as it allows me to smoothly pull off the line, and I can set the drag on it and use the tension created by that reel's drag to give the spool a nice, even tension when I take it back up.  

Thanks does this apply to spinning as Well? Sometimes when I’m fishing a senko with 15-20lb braid the line lays loose on the spool. I guess at the end of the day i should cast and retrieve all my rods and reels under tension
