Palomar knot question

Featured Replies

What is the correct way of snugging up this knot? Pull on both tag end and mainline at the same time, just the mainline or just the tag end?

Thanks

I had posted about this before and didnt quite get the answer i was looking for so i decided to test.

My unscientific tests determined that pulling the tag end first and setting the final loop it tightens (the loop that the hook goes through) just above the hook eye then tightening the mainline and tag end together made for the strongest knot. Every time I tested, this method of tightening won out vs seating that loop in any other place.

I draw up both lines together then I pull on the tag end by itself and then pull on the main line by itself. Don’t think it really matters.

I always have the loop cinch down on top of the overhand knot. But I’ve seen videos where the loop is cinched down the way you describe

Palomar knot is sensitive to overheating FC line so wet before snugging up the over hand loop, then pull the tag end tight.

What weakens Palomar knots is twisting the loop when putting the hook though.

So you pull the mainline first then pull the tag to finish it?

Pull tag and main at same time. Don’t over tighten. If tied properly in mono or fluoro, there is virtually no chance of overheating. Moistening probably won’t hurt, but I’ve mostly given that up these days. With braid, the knot will start cinching quickly and you’ll end up having to pull on just the tag end to fully seat.

This is what the knot shoud look like prior to tightening:

So with braid you just pull the tag end and no mainline?

Youre just gonna have to grab some lengths of line and practice tying it yourself.

Test the knots against each other and decide what works best for you.

Depends on braid. With smooth/slick braid you can still pull both. Some coated braids don’t cinch smoothly so you’ll have to pull one or the other. Not sure it matters which with braid though like it does with nylon and fluoro. I think I always go tag with braid when this occurs. That said, not a big fan or user  of straight braid, so been a while since I tied it last this way. I’ll double check.

When using braid I got in the habit of cinching by pulling the main line, then tag, then mainline again.
The last 2 steps aren’t really necessary but I do it anyway.

Why shouldn’t I just snug down the Overhand knot slightly before putting the loop through the lure? I find when the overhand knot is loose it’s more of a pain to cinch everything down

Totally unnecessary, but tie however you want. If you see any “curliness” in either main or tag, you’ll know you burned the knot. I’m just saying if tied properly, you pull both lines at same time so everything cinches together at once and minimizes any chance of burning. If you start tightening certain parts of the knot first, you risk burning when continuing to tighten other parts.

Just snug the overhand loop and pull the tag end tight then test by pulling the main line.

With mono/FC look at the main line next to the know for any flattened shinny line indicating a poor knot.

I don't a Palomar knot for lures, hooks and snaps are easy to put through the loop.

San Diego jam knot works good for lures and jigs using the lure weight to help tie the knot.
