4” stick bait an alternative to 4” jerk bait?

Featured Replies

I just bought 2-100 packs big bite baits 4” trick sticks for a really good price. But I now see their 4” jerk bait for a decent price. My question is do the stick baits act similarly to the jerkbait when twitching them?

ps keep an eye on amazon. Search “big bite baits 100” and go through all the color options for different prices. They change regularly

Uh oh...you hear that?

Thats called the ‘if this is good, that will be better..’

Usually I hear that voice between beer 7 and 9.

I don't know about the big bite version specifically, but fluke-style soft jerkbaits usually move a little differently when twitched than a stickbait. This jerkbait profile gives it more of a gliding motion, while the stick bait has more mass on the posterior half, which makes it wobble and bend more. But that's just a generalization, and all companies baits are a little different.

Not completely the same but stick bait can be fish as fast, the same way you fish soft plastic jerkbait. The darting left and right motion will be less, and sink a little faster. I caught bass twisting 4-5” senko fast before, on top of weed and around shallow edge area.

Nothing compared to a Zoom Super Fluke IMO.  Great action, easy on the wallet, great colors, easy to find everywhere.

I've had some good success with soft jerkbaits over the years but I've basically replaced then with the stick baits. I dont throw the 4 inch much but the 5 is a staple. I'm sure there are times when one will out fish the other.  I would take the stick bait over the jerkbait in most situations

Since we never know what presentation is "the one' on any given day I would say they have enough of a similar motion that given a morning of junk fishing you have tried that 'jerkbait" presentation and could move onto a different action or bait.

It's not the same, but until you've dialed in the fish its similar enough.

I throw a floating black magnum finesse worm (thanks Gman) that always reminds me of a jerkbait.

Not sure if your asking if that specific brands softs JBs and stick baits have similar action or soft JBs and stick baits in general.  Ive never used Big Bites flukes or stick baits so not sure about the particular brand.  Traditionally a stick bait has a shimmy when it falls on slack line and that's usually when it gets hit.  I fish a soft JB just like a hard JB.  I snap the rod a certain number of times, when I snap the rod the soft JB stops sinking and darts from side to side.  After I snap it 2, 3 or how ever many times I pause and let it sink for a certain amount of seconds.  The hit with a soft JB can happen any time, but usually happens as soon as I stop moving it or when I start moving it after a pause.  In my mind its kind of the same idea.  I throw a senko style stick bait when I want to fish vertical, covering the entire water column from surface to bottom.  I use a soft JB to fish horizontal, covering a certain depth like 3ft under the surface to 8 ft. for example.  The method used to fish each bait is similar, in fact zoom makes a bait called a flue stick.  Its just a stick bait with a spllt tail on the end and I've caught fish on them.

Okay...thanks everyone. I’m just trying to talk myself out of spending another 20 spot when I don’t need to. I do have some 4” jerkbaits but not as many as I’d like.  Have plenty of 5”.
Usually throw 5” trick sticks, stik-o’s and dingers, so not really used to 4” stick baits. One time I lit them up on a 4” jerkbait shallow and would like to replicate that.  Only fished 4” sticks a hand full of times and had luck.  I feel it’s more specific for super clear, super shallow conditions compared to 5” ones since they sink pretty slow.  Don’t remember trying to jerk them.

Bought the 4” trick sticks for Ned, shaky (maybe), Neko, and as I said above finesse fishing.

I’ll keep an eye on prices. Anything under $20 for the jerks I may bite.

Don't need to post as this would have been my response as well, I like the darting action of the stick bait over the gliding action of the jerkbait myself....seems to trigger more strikes more often.

A 4" stick worm with a VMC Drop Dead 3/0 EWG in 1/16th oz. or 3/32nd oz. version on light braid + FC leader ... Cast out and then dead stick for 30 seconds or so - then repeat. This rig has a nice horizontal sink rate and looks like an easy injured shad meal .
