Caught several fish on Douglas lake last week/end that were grossly skinny and had these sores on them. One fish I caught(didn’t take a pic) was around 2 lbs but had the head of a 4lber. The sores were like oozing pus? Everyone caught was very sickly looking. Any thoughts? I posted on Facebook and people have shared a lot more pics out of this lake as well

I looks a bit like viral hemorrhagic septicemia to me but I am not a biologist.

Have you asked the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency about what you and others have found?

 

If not, please do so.

 

The sores may be transmittable to humans. I hope not.

 

But you really need to get the TWRA involved.

If you recall, there was a post on this Forum about Maryland closing a section of the Potomac River due to a bacteria infestation.

 

Just saying you do yourself no good to get the bacteria or virus onto your hands so be careful.

Don't give them a kiss before releasing!

That's a bad case of the aqua herp.  I see it often, but never to that extent.  Years ago there was a bad outbreak of red sores on stripers, particularly in the Chesapeake.  A couple people had gotten really sick as a result of an open wound on the anglers hand coming into contact with sore on the fish or just eating them.  I had heard someone actually died after being infected, but I cant substantiate it.  I think its best to just be careful with any sores or legions on fish.
