Fly-In Trip to Ontario

Featured Replies

Anyone here have any experience doing a fly-in trip to Ontario for smallmouth?  I'm starting to plan a trip and have never done it before.  Been looking at Lount Lake through Nestor Falls.

Almost everyone got their trips this year cancelled due to the border closing. Most guys were able to roll over their deposits until next year. But the border may still be closed next year because of covid 19. Lots of camps could go under financially if the season is closed two years running. So be careful with your money regarding a deposit. The camps that rely on American customers instead of Canadian customers are between a rock & a hard place. 2021 could be iffy.

Being from SoCal this will sound odd but my late father inlaw had a float plane near Nestor Falls and flew into several lakes in that area. I would rank Height of Land #1 for numbers of 2lb to 3lb smallies and lots musky. Arrow lake was the top producer for smallies to 4 lbs.

If you can't fly and in the Nestor Falls area Crow lake is the lake locals fish for lake trout and has excellent smallmouth bass fishing that is over looked. Then there is always Lake of the Woods has good Smallmouth fishing.

We had our trip cancelled this year because of the virus.   Rolled our deposits over to next year.  Since our week doesn't start until August 28th, hopefully there will be a vaccine available by then.   Getting the injection might be the ticket for getting across the border.   Can't really help with fly-in trip.  We've been doing a drive-in trip for almost 30 years now.  We drive to the pick-up point and then it's a 19 mile boat ride to the lodge.

Nestor Falls is at the top of my list right now.  It's about a 9.5 hour drive and then fly into Lount or Kay Lake.

Kay lake was my father inlaws favorite lake trout lake, never fished Lount so don't know.

Enjoy your trip wonderful wilderness experience.

Not sure if they are even letting people cross the border right now, but there was a 14 day quarantine period earlier for after entering Canada

I don't plan on going there for a couple years yet.  Need to get things planned out, find out who's going for sure and start saving up money.
