Is the Black Max discontinued?

Featured Replies

It looks like the Abu Garcia Black Max is hard to find.  Has it been discontinued?

Yes, but I just saw the reel-only option on the Abu-Garcia site as out of stock, and it looks like the options on Amazon are mostly left-handed and only available "from other sellers".  Maybe they're just having some supply chain problems.

I would think quite a few have no love for such an inexpensive baitcaster as the BM. But owning two, I have to say that I was surprised by how well I fished with them this year. Definitely easy to set spool tension and braking. I guess time will tell how long they last, but truth be told, it’s a hard reel to beat for that price. I think I paid $43.00. Even that’s a real bargain.

I burnt all of my Cabela's card points on a silver max and it was a nice reel for zero money. Now it belongs to my 11 year old nephew, and thinks it's the greatest thing ever.

Like I said, time will tell. But seriously, it’s surprising a reel at that price works as well as it does. I haven’t had to readjust spool tension once (unless changing to a lighter or heavier bait). Nor the brake. Maybe my one “complaint” is that there can be a fine line between too much, just right and too little braking, and without numbers on the side plate you can’t simply set it to “6” for a 1/2 oz. lure, etc. But once it’s set, it stays set.

I got about 4 to 5 years out of mine and it had some mileage on it. They're a great budget reel.

The Black Max is still listed on the ABU Garcia website, but is shown to be "out of stock".

The Silver Max appears to essentially be a silver colored Black Max with a "rocket cast" button. If you don't care about the "rocket cast" button, you might as well save $10 and get a Black Max.

I have recently seen a baitcasting reel listed as a MaxPro that is white that has similar specs to the Pro Max 3, but has white sideplates and knobs, and it is not listed on their website. They do show a MaxPro spinning reel that has a white color scheme.

It's possible that they have not recently updated their website to reflect all of the changes to their lineup going forward.

I’m still rocking my black max combo from 4 seasons ago ( first bait caster).  I picked up a like new silver max for 30 bucks shippe d on eBay which, has been a steal of a deal.  Not the greatest reels but, probably best bang for your buck as a beginner or as a extra/loaner rod
