  1. Trolling has to be done going slow and most people in motor boats don't want to slow down and stay in one area, so honestly trolling isn't much fun if you're in a motorboat but there are people who troll in them. Stripers, catfish, northern fisher-people troll and lots of southern crappie fishermen troll for crappies. It's just a choice or style of fishing you either enjoy or you don't. I've been trolling for stripers and it was relaxing more so than beating the banks or drop offs but I wouldn't want to do it all the time.
  2. Went camping in the mountains way back years ago and the family camped next to me showed me how to filet fish the easy way. Cut down behind the big gill to the bone, turn the filet knife and cut to the tail which you leave attached, flip filet over then cut it out of the skin, cut out the ribcage then you're finished! Sharp knife or electric is the way you want to go!
  3. The lake isn't eating your jigs, you are throwing them were they get hung and you loose them because they break off. If you're getting bites on a Texas rig then use that in that lake. Your question should be how to fish the jigs? I use jigs for panfish everything else I use other lures, lots of people love to jig fish and that's fine. Use the weight of jigs for what fish you're trying to catch, heavy jigs aren't that easy to fish with, and it takes practice.
  4. There are many ML rods in your price range I love the Shimano Zodias, really nice, St Croix makes really good rods I think they are a little stiff for ML but still really nice, Lew's is one of my all time favorites and it doesn't get the recognition it should, I have a Team Lew's Pro TI Speed Stick. It's a super fine rod I love the grips and the Roland Marten stick it in your belly end butt. G-Loomis makes one but it's pricey for the name not any better than the others I've listed. Go look and feel some different brands at the tackle store that will help you decide but all I've listed are good buys within your budget, look for sales!
  5. Costa's are guaranteed for life I think get on their website and see what you do to get them fixed. I think you just mail them to Costa.
  6. It was 75 degrees here in NC today, set a record. I went fishing for a little while after lunch and caught 3 nice bass from 1lb- 3lb it was fun of course.
  7. I have been fishing three days in a row at the pond, when the wind was blowing bass were up feeding. Caught one the first day, second day went trout fishing caught one, last day caught two bass and went home. All of the bass were 2-3 lbs lots of fun catching them on a spoon!
  8. You might want to practice backing the boat in a big parking lot or somewhere you're not going to hit anything. If you do it right you can take the tie up rope and tie it to the trailer, then unhook everything back up into the water and let the boat float off the trailer. Then you just pull the boat over to the dock and tie it up, pull your truck out and park end of unloading.
  9. My fishing has always been simplified, even when I had a boat and motor I fished in lakes close to my home with not too much equipment. Sold the boat and now fish ponds, rivers, streams on foot I have never taken 2 rods. A small over the shoulder satchel and I rarely change lures. But I have to say fishing is a sport for different people so many people like many different things, what ever floats your boat or not.
  10. I have fished BFS for years, before we named and tagged it. I find though you will loose some fish because it's sometimes inevitable when you catch a 5lb bass on 4-6 lb line. It's definitely a lot of fun and you can use spinning gear if you like!
  11. A roll cast with a bait caster is not like the video you've put up. He's not fly fishing and people in bass fishing didn't borrow it, you're confused yourself TnRiver what it is. Why would you be frustrated over a simple question? The guy fly fishing is using his whole arm to cast as most fly fishers do. You need to look at someone making the cast using a bait caster not a fly rod! Just go fishing and use any cast you want it isn't rocket science but we all were trying to answer the question.
  12. I pitched my bait caster for a year in my back yard and an overhand roll cast just came to me from repeating different ways to cast a bait caster. Actually the easiest way to explain it is this; with an old lure tied to line let it drop down about 2feet, engage release button hold your thumb on it of course and make a big circle holding everything but not casting. Then do the same thing but when the rod tip comes around to the bottom of the circle release and throw. Once you get the hang of it your circle becomes small and you can throw with a flick of your wrist. Practice, practice till you get it! Good luck and happy fishing.
  13. I used to chase schooling bass and I've caught many, 5lb being the largest. You're making way too much of it, big fish eat other smaller fish, the bass school up depending on size then chase the bait balls. You need to read the lake you're fishing, where do you see them breaking on the top of the water, what time, and when you catch one what does it spit up, match the hatch then just go chase them! All that electronic equipment has made you dependent on watching a screen, turn it all off and go have fun really fishing.
  14. Your eyes are very important so don't be a cheap scape buy the best you can afford and don't listen to opinions of what people like. You don't ask people which doctor to use when you're sick. Go to the store that sells sunglasses and try on some or go to your ophthalmologist they fit and sell sunglasses. I've bought cheap ones and real good ones, I stop buying cheap ones because I have a sight problem, your eye condition should tell you which glasses you need not the cost.
  15. Squalls on a lake are common especially big lakes. Several years back a friend and I was fishing Falls Lake in Durham, N.C. and a squall came up out of know were. Many bass boats were sunk and some people hurt. I had an old high sided boat my brother gave me, so we made it to shore with the lake patrol watching from the bank to be sure we were ok. It really was scary, easy 3 foot waves pounding the boat and water washing in all the while. Nature is strong and sometimes sneaks up on you, no forecast of any kind that day from the weather people.
  16. Fishing is fun and neither an art or science. It's a passion to some and frustration to others so it's whatever you make it to be for yourself!
  17. Fishing jerk bait is a feel kind of thing and it's not rocket science as some people make it out to be. You need to use a fairly stiff rod, nothing UL but you can easily use a Med too. Practice fishing jerk baits on windy days so you feel the lure working, which should be a cast, wait till ripples stop, jerk, reel, jerk, wait, jerk, reel. Find your own cadence and when you catch a fish keep doing that same movement you made when you caught the fish. I love to fish small jerk baits
  18. EWG= extra wide gap or long shank hooks work best for thick softbait lures. Long shanks, just skin hook them so they are weedless. Tie straight to the hook don't use swivel or anything between the hook and line. Pause just for a second when you feel the bite then reel up and set the hook at the same time. When you've learned how to set the hook faster or your hooked fish improves, you want to set the hook as soon as you feel the bite to prevent gut hooking the fish.
  19. Does Evergreen brand Gizmo lures just come in one size? I can't find anything online but one size 1x1/12 in long you'd think they would have made a small one for panfish.
  20. I've caught several big bass that were old, I wanted to give them something real to eat so the next time I went to the pond I gave all of the fish some fish food!
  21. This did not happen over night, it's be coming for a long time. Whenever you put big money out there for people to win they will use whatever they can to get it. Tournaments should not allow FFS how about a depth finder on your boat and honestly you don't really need that. I've owned several bass boats and hardly ever looked at the screen. FSS teaches you to be a screen watcher and that's all, in my opinion it's for lazy people.
  22. I bought a small cooler then mounted an aquarium pump that runs on batteries to the side, drilled a hole in the top and ran the bubble pipe down to the bottom of the cooler with a stone on the end. Use water from were you buy or catch the minnows, don't use tap water, and get them out with a dip net.
  23. I'm doing nothing wrong, I catch fish on lots of different lures. Never compare yourself to anyone it's ok to not like certain lures, I hate big crank baits, will never fish them. Do we really have to be efficient at every lure that's made?
  24. I don't ever fish for bedding bass, and I don't agree with anyone that thinks bed fishing is fun. Leave those fish alone there will be lots of time to catch them later!
  25. For 150 bucks you can buy a Shimano Stradic and that is a fantastic reel, better than any JM reel and a big step up from the Naci . I have both reels, I always fish the Stradic. There is no comparing Shimano to JM. Look on Digitaka and order one up!
