  1. Mom & Pop stores are not always the best, I bought my first Shimano Ci-4 reel from one 40 miles from my house. They sold me a returned reel that has never worked well, drag was screwed up. When I called them and wanted to return it, they said NO. So, I'm into ordering online or going to a big box store if they have what I want!
  2. There is a park near my house that stocks trout each year when the weather is cold enough to sustain them. I went one year and I gotta say it was no fun at all, that's not fishing that's catching dumb fish that have never seen a hook or bait. I've never went back and I'd go real trout fishing any day if I liked to wade. Never understood why people thing everything should be easy, cause life isn't easy!
  3. Jigs, I hate them so I'm not good at using them, crank baits ehh, and huge baits not into them. Everything else I know how to throw or use. I spent a year practicing how to throw a bait caster, and I think it's like riding a bike, you never forget if it's burned into your brain but, I still don't like fishing with bait casters much. I can do everything with a spinning reel a bait caster can do and more.
  4. I don't believe there is such a thing, fishing has a lot of luck in it, sometimes it's being at the right place and throwing something that looks like food and a big fish strikes. If you fish for big fish, and you have caught many, you have taught yourself how and you're using the right stuff. No such thing as a gene or any kind of human trait that just kicks in and brings you a big bass.
  5. Absolutely not, I consider myself a seasoned experienced fisherwoman! I've been fishing since I was 5 years old and next week on Labor Day I"ll be 75. I can not possibly be a novice or a beginner. And I don't mind bragging that I know a lot about fishing and I usually don't share my knowledge. Now there.
  6. This was quite boring and I couldn't watch but 3 seconds, really dude?
  7. Two rods, one ul for pan fish and one bass rod, keep it simple. And that is to answer your question doesn't mean I only have 2.
  8. River fishing calls for a shorter rod 6'10" or shorter, I would save some money and buy a St Croix mojo bass rod they are on sale right now most places for easy 125.00, Fenwick makes a nice rod, just pick how much you want to spend, and ABU has some good rods, they are always stronger than they are listed (power) an UL is more like a Med. Go to the sport shop take your reel and try some on, flick it, bend it hold it, see what you like. And good luck!
  9. Not all guides are good some are just sorry out to get your money. I've had some bad experiences with guides and just a few good ones. References is what you need and from men and women. You should have asked to be taken back to the boat ramp and for a REFUND!
  10. I have fished both; banks and boat. I have caught larger fish in ponds bank fishing, more fish in lakes. Bank fishing is easier and some ponds are big enough to be called small lakes and you need a canoe or some kind of boat to fish it. It's all about what you like, what time you have and what you can afford.
  11. The Luvius is so smooth you'll like it a lot!
  12. Use a bigger hook and set the hook soon as you feel the bite don't wait.
  13. I think a 1000 size reel is excellent for finesse fishing, that said I have three in that size a Ci4 shamano, a stradic, and a Daiwa Luvias. I like the Ci4 over all of the others and will recommend it always. My question to you is why do you need such a heavy rod to finesse fish? Light, or ML is what works the best for this kind of fishing. I also have a 1000 Miravel but it's not my favorite, I think it's more of a all around use reel I wouldn't say it's the best for finesse, it's too heavy and too big
  14. I feel good catching the first or the last, but usually the first cast can catch a fish.
  15. Thread up a night crawler on a circle hook or medium size plastic worm hook, add a float about 3-4 feet up the line, throw out from shore in 6 feet of water, usually catches some nice bass. I've caught some 5 pound bass on nightcrawler, especially in the fall.
  16. It use to be summer but it's been so hot here in NC I've lost my fishing spirit so, Fall will become my favorite fishing season this year and most likely winter too.
  17. Big screw and washer poke thru line spool screw to the wall of your shop start winding. Or you can buy a spool holder and line holder from Walmart, Academy, 15.00 I think works like a charm has a little rubber lined hole to thread the line through.
  18. I would say take them fishing with a good small closed face reel, worms, cork, and lots of patience. You don't fish, let them fish and catch, you show them how to catch brim. You could start at home in the yard and teach them how to cast. Safety is utmost but don't beat it in kids heads they won't want to go. Fun it should be!
  19. I got a hook in my hand just a couple weeks ago, I pushed it through because it was in a fleshy part, then drove home (5 min drive) and my neighbor cut it off for me. Next day I bought a sharp pair of cutters and I'll never leave the lure on in transport again. This was the second time I made this mistake this year. Those hooks hurt and they are dangerous. I always wear glasses throughout the whole year even when it's not sunny, I have low light glasses for that.
  20. I have caught several 10lb bass and some over 10. I was never seeking them out, it just happened and was lots of fun because it was a surprise. My only preparation for a large fish is I do have a dedicated bass setup that will easily reel in a large fish. For the last easy 5 years I've fished finesse most of the time and it is a thrill to land a big fish on small rod and reel. Chasing big fish is a no for me but I love to catch bass small or big!
  21. I've been fishing BFS with light line and small lures for years. I have to say, you will loose a few fish especially if you catch one in a lot of trash, but it is a lot of fun. I use spinning reels, UL rods always have always will.
  22. Thanks Katie, for posting insight into fishing and this forum. I too have learned a lot from lots of people on here and I like to read the responses different people have. Nice to know some women like to fish, I've been fishing since I was 5 my brother took me brim fishing and I've been hooked forever. My tackle box has filled up and I have a good selection of rods and reels, thanks to BR.
  23. What are you fishing for that is the need for such a long rod?
  24. I haven't had a new rod with plastic cover on it in many years. Seriously why put anything on a cork fishing rod? You bought the cork because you like it so enjoy it as is. Take the stupid plastic off the rod and go fishing! Cork lasts a long time and it doesn't need polyurethane spray on it either.
  25. I love spinning rods and I use them all the time. I have lots of sizes and lots of different rods to use from UL to Heavy. I have one bait caster and I can throw it ok but honestly it's not easy to use, not my favorite so I rarely take it fishing. If I was a carp or catfish catcher then I would use my bait caster for that kind of fishing. Catching a bass on a med 7' rod with a bait caster ain't much to feeling the fish or even playing it in, more like catching a fish on a winch. Salt water striper fishing is also what baitcasters were made for. IMO
