Dobyns Sierra Reel Seat Nut Issue

Featured Replies

So I had purchased 2 Sierras (spinning). One for a friend and decided to get one for myself.

When I tighten down the reel seat nut, it doesn't seem to come down as far as it should. I have seen someone else post a pic of theirs here once before and it had the same issue. I figured maybe that one was just a fluke. But now I wonder if it may be an issue with all  of the Sierra spinning rods?

Anybody else have a Sierra spinning without this issue?

I don't think they can make the nut end up in the perfect position for all reel feet. Reel feet differ in length and thinkness even among the same brands.

I've never had this issue with any other spinning rods before. I also tried 4 different sized reels, and it was the same for them all. Obviously the rod is still functional (as long as the nut stays tight), but it's just more of a minor annoyance. Doesn't help that I'm a tad OCD. ;)

E mail Dobyns and let them see the issue. The rod was bought in new condition and should be in new condition, I recently purchased a Dobyns rod where the techniques  the rod could be used for had spelling errors, it doesn't impact performance but I purchased a new rod.  I really hope they aren't starting to have quality control issues, or letting sloppy work hit the market , either way it's not acceptable. I sent them picture's of the spelling errors and they sent me paperwork to send the rod back, the replacement rod had all technique's spelt correctly.

Congratulations! I'm so glad to see that you stuck it to them! No one should tolerate errors like that!

BTW, you can remove the apostrophes from "picture's" and "technique's". Plurals are not formed by means of apostrophes. And spelt is an ancestor of our modern wheat.

I just bought one and I've noticed the same issue with my shimano sahara reel. I'm going to try switching to one of my other ones to see if it has a better fit. A little disappointed to say the least...

I'm still waiting to see the "picture's" of the spelling errors printed on the rod.

I emailed Dobyn's about it and they responded almost immediately. Apparently I was just being too gentle with the lock nut. They told me to make sure I wiggle the reel all the way down as far as I could before tightening the lock nut. After making sure everything is lined up, crank the lock nut down and it helps. Hopefully it fixes it. Makes me nervous that my reel is going to fall out when I have a fish on.

That’s just because they trim the threads, which I do on every custom build. Yes , reel feet vary. Seat the foot and tighten the nut you’ll be fine.

I was gonna say to give the reel a little shake when seating it in. Just don't do it more then twice because then your just playing with it.

Also... dobyns rods look so nice man! I love the look of all of them.
