Savage Gear The "Bat"

Featured Replies

How good does this lure work? What size and color do you prefer?

I couldn’t resist buying a brown, black and white bat for the collection. I’ve never thrown them and have no plan to do so. I gave a friend an extra brown one I bought and he said it crawled fine. I think it would make a great musky lure or big bass bait.  I have also bought the Jackal Pompadour and it is an excellent crawling lure that I would recommend you invest in.

They're a cool crawler bait. Either size works. They do not do well in much surface chop, so a calm day is best. I've done best with the black and grey colors.

Smells like fish and Bluebasser86,

Thank you, both of you for some great information regarding the use of the bat.

I bought the smaller one on a whim.  I have caught 4+ pound bass with it and some so small that there would be no way they could swallow it.  Now that I think about it, I need to throw it more.

Plottman1974,

Thank you for that great information. I will be purchasing one of each color of the small ones. There is nothing that I enjoy more than seeing that top water lure disappear. How I love to fish. You take care and stay safe.

It's probably the goofiest bait I've ever caught a fish on.  I agree with Clayton, black is what I used.

J Francho,

Thank you for your information. You can be assured I will be throwing one this summer. Take care and have a wonderful and safe weekend.

Got a black one.  Went to a pond where I had seen them eating bats in the evening.  I threw it out and it got smoked by an 8-10lber. Broke off about 2' from getting it in.

Thank you, Zeth,

I will be calling the store I deal with on Monday. I will purchase some Bats and snakes made by Savage Gear. Zeth, you take care and stay safe.

It's a cool looking bait.  Has anyone ever seen a bat actually in the water? I have, it was the weirdest thing, was fishing one day and all of a sudden a bat comes flying out of nowhere and tried to land on my wife. She moved and it flew some more and fell in the water...it than immediately started swimming for shore.

I don't doubt the bat lure catches fish but the action of the lure, crawling left right, is not the same as the real thing. The real bat had a action much more like a jump frog.

Jonas Staggs,

Thank you for chiming in on this post. I have never seen a bat in a body of water. I'm vary anxious to see this lure in action. Jonas, you take care and have a wonderful and safe weekend.

The story behind the bait is that the creator actually had a bat land in his pool.  Watching it struggle to get out, he thought it would be something a predatory fish would likely strike.  It's not specifically designed for bass, but I think it appeals to them.  I'm actually surprised I hadn't caught some northern pike with it.  It seems right up their alley.
