So I've been going back and forth on S wavers...big keitechs on a beast hook...top hook swim baits...you name it. Finally think I've settled on getting a line thru as my first foray into the swim bait game. I'm thinking something in the 5 inch range around that 1oz weight give or take a little. I need some bait recommendations? Also what size treble for a bait like this? Last but not least rod,reel and line suggestions?

The 1st line through swimbait was Eagle dating back into the early 90’s. Why a line through? The reasoning was soft was soft swimbait are like big gum balls inside the bass mouth. Trying to get a solid hook set means moving the gum ball to get a hook set. 

The popular thinking that line through helps to keep the hook set BS imo. Bass rarely bump strike a swimbait like a crank bait, the engulf it! 

What everyone who starts using swimbait mistake is using the rod, reel and line need to be successful.

I've had good luck with the Optimum line thru baits, the BLTs (baby line thrus). The Savage Gear line through baits are really nice too. Some of them I tried were nice but super fragile. They get destroyed after a fish or two.

 

The right equipment depends a lot on the size bait you end up choosing. If it's in the range you listed, a big crankbait rod is fine with 15lb fluoro/mono/copoly.

What size hook on the BLTs 5 inch? I may try one of those...also do you know the weight on those?

I got this guy from Savage Gear, Pulse Tail Shiner in the White color. It comes with a treble hook to use. Thought it looked really close to the shad in my lakes. It was a Xmas gift so I’ve not fished with it yet.

I think it's a #1. They're in the 1 1/4oz range I think. They're a pretty decent sized hunk of plastic in the head but they swim really true and are very affordable.

Those are really nice, but they're going to be quite a bit above the size limit of the OP's gear. Mine has gotten slammed a couple times but nobody has found the hook yet.

I forgot he was looking for 1oz lures. That guy I’m throwing on a swimbait rod. Hmm. That missing hook deal must be both exhilarating and frustrating.

I'm gonna pick up one of these and on @Bluebasser86 recommendations I'm gonna pick up an optimum baby line thru 4inch.

Ive got an Optimum Boom Boom line through but ive yet to throw it.
