Has anyone weighed actual soft plastic lures? Ive though about throwing five GYCB Zako swimbaits on an A Rig but they seem awfully heavy and I'm trying to keep as low a weight as possible. I know it would take a gram scale then some simple conversions to oz. But I dont have a gram scale. To me things like Swimming Super Flukes seem really light and like a Zako heavy. Not too concerned about craws and worms and such.

Answered a few of my lure questions. Didnt see the Zako, swimming fluke, or maybe i should add paddle tail Zako as well. 

 

I need some black swimbaits for an A Rig for dirty water and it seems like not alot of companys make a black and blue or all black swimbait. I have black blue flake Zakos but from reading that thread I bet they are heavier than I imagined. Five of them at close to a half ounce plus the rig itself and jig heads would be really pushing the weight I would be comfortable with on my rod.

 

I am constantly wearing plastics and other lures, plastics especially are generally heavier than you would guess.

You can make any bait black with a sharpie.

So .33 oz is about 1/3 oz?

.33 is exactly 1/3oz

You could always try using 5" grubs for your a-rig. I know Kalins sells them in black.

I'm on my second after wearing the first one out and they are very accurate.  You'll be shocked at the inconsistency of advertised lure weights and even the actual weight of those lead/tungsten weights you are buying.  You will also be shocked at how much some of your presentations weigh in total.

Last winter, I was bored and spent an afternoon weighing baits and jigs. It was very interesting to see what the actual combined weight of the various jigs and trailers were. When I weighed the combos that were my top producers throughout the year, they were all within a half gram of each other whereas combos that didn't produce were heavier or lighter. It implied that there was a magic weight number for that summer because the colors and styles were quite varied.

If I remember correctly, jig combos with a combined weight of 23 grams were the ticket in the central Michigan 2019 season. ?

Well, I just did some weighing of my best producer last season.

Strike King Tour Grade Swim Jig - 3/8oz

Berkley Pit Boss trailer - 4"

 

Total weight - .70oz/20gm

I picked up a gram scale years ago and weigh every thing on it; baits, rods, reels and sinkers.

Ya - I weighed my rods this winter so I have a total weight (without line) for my combos. Amazing how little spread there is despite the differences.

IMNSHO, the weight of a plastic bait is irrelevant.

When you have five baits on one setup a quarter ounce difference adds up fast. That's an extra ounce and a quarter. 

 

Both of those scales listed were way cheaper than I ever expected. I just may have to pick one up!

The only plastics I'm concerned about are swimbaits because they will be going on an A Rig. I'm good with the weight of it now but if going to a Zako or paddle tail Zako adds another ounce it would be pushing the weight I would be comfortable throwing on the rod in using. I'm guessing at the moment with small Yum Pulse swimbaits its over an ounce and a half.

Just curious...What color belt and shoes go with that?

The weight of soft plastic has little to do with Rate Of Fall. What matters is specific gravity is heavier then water so it sinks in lieu of floating or suspending.

Most soft plastics suspend in water unless loaded with salt like a Senko.
