Shimano Curado K Question

Featured Replies

I just noticed that the Curado, that there are 2 versions? The Curado K and Curado K 200?

When did this happen and what are the differences?

Are you sure? There is a MGL 70 K, 200 K and a 300 K

   Advertisers. ???

Look on Shimano's website. That will clear things up.         jj

I did. Look at academy sports, they have both those curados. And the "new" curado K has different handle knows in the pic and they call it Curado K

Shimano reels are sometimes advertised primarily by the retrieve ratio; PG for Power Gear (5.0:1), HG for High Gear (7.4:1), and XG for Extra-high Gear (8.5:1). The Curado 200 series is classified that way.

But guess what they call the Curado between the PG and the HG, the one that is 6.2:1? Yup, you guessed it! They just call it the "200 K". No extra gear-ratio designation at all.

That's the way they are on the Shimano website.

Now you know why I said "Advertisers" and included the three roll-eyes emojis. Admen and marketing can ruin the best work of engineers and manufacturing.

   Hope this helped.           jj

The handle is different on the one posted on the Academy website.

I see that now. You're talking about the two little ribs on the pad?                     jj

The knob caps are different as well. Looks like a Tranx handle.

I have all 3 K models. Only the 300K has grooves on its knobs.

Yeah, I see a difference in end caps between  this

At first I thought it was just the lighting, but now I see the connector on the cap looks different.

Best things I know are either look at the schematics for each or else call Shimano in California. Other than that, I have no clue don't know.    ?    jj

The "PG" 5:1 or so ratio of the Curado is a completely different reel from the standard Curado K despite being the same size. Parts are not interchangeable when it comes to drag stack and anti reverse. The PG version was also released like 2 years after the standard and HG models were released which could be the reason some sellers list it separately.

That reel on the bottom of that picture is a PG version which is a different reel from the standard Curado K above it. As I mentioned, parts are not interchangeable and per Shimano USA it has separate schematics which they don't even have available themselves yet ... or didnt 2 months ago.

The one labeled "new" is the CU200PGK which is a 5.0:1 cranking reel with 21" IPT line retrieve. PG stand for "Power Gear."

The other listing is for the 6.2:1, 7.4:1 and 8.5:1 speed reels

https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/shimano-curado-k-saltwater-baitcast-reel#repChildCatid=4800057

Academy has them as two separate listings while Shimano list them all on the same product page.

Very interesting. I think I'll make a phone call to Shimano. I'd like to see whether the face width of the gears are different or not.                         jj

I have no idea. I was just told that if i wanted to convert a 6.3:1 or whatever to 5.0:1 many parts had to be swapped not just pinion and main gear.

Well ok, it’s the same reel. Thanks all for your help!
