A smelled hook is a hook with a mono leader tied to it. Hooked one end tied loop on other for you to attach to snap? Snap swivel or whatever.

There's at least a couple of different versions of the snell knot ~

Here's Two

?no doubt in my mind. Those old school EC bait holders are tuff. When I was kid/young guy I use to fish for carp and channel catfish and caught some big’uns on EC No. 2’s 4’s 6’s. The Jewish guys wanted the carp. But wanted them alive. They use to put them in the bathtub for a few days and flush them out I guess. They would give us a couple of dollars for them. The channel cats, guys in town would pitch us some money or would give us new terminal tackle for them. Keeping the carp alive was a PIA. More work than what it was worth. Kid and stupid. I wish I had pics of those days.

Leave a chunk of bunker (menhaden)  on any hook and the hook and everything around it will be smelled.

We used to catch carp and had some local folks that would pay us $5.00 a fish. They also kept them alive a few days to flush them out. Said they soaked the filets in milk to remove the fishy taste.

I use a snell knot when attaching a hook with a bent eye (or no eye). It's also popular when t-rigging using a pegged weight as when punching.

Originally hooks didn't have eyes. Believe it or not some folks still make hooks by hand and the shank just has a flattened/widened portion at the end of the shank. Such a hook is attached by a snell knot tied around the shank of the hook. The widened portion at the tip of the hook is all that's required to keep the knot from sliding off the shank.

AJ's post shows two of the several methods of tying a snell.
