Casting jigs in stained/dirty water

Featured Replies

What's everyones favorite jig retrieve after casting it out in these water conditions? I usually just do the traditional hop and pause retrieve and change the speed up based on the season, with fishing these water conditions I always make sure my trailer has a bunch of flapping action, I usually love throwing a rage menace or rage craw on the back. In water clarity below a foot dragging jigs simply doesn't work for me. I've always had luck on hopping for some reason.

Water like that I use a trailer with a lot of action....for me it's a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver. I hop it but also get bites on the fall after the cast too.

I like a dark jig with a big trailer on it.  Something that makes the bait easier to see, and gives off some action.

Regardless of water clarity, no one retrieve works every time.  Stained, or dirty is a vague description, but with visibility less than a foot, I've found that dragging a football jig with loud rattles and a high action trailer to be the most productive.

Black jig, black and  blue skirt, with black and blue flake chigger craw ( any black/blue craw would work).  Even in stained and dirty water 80% of the time they still nail it in the drop.  I may slow my retrieve up a little bit, it’s a combination of hops, drags, and pauses until you figure out their mood if they don’t hit it in the drop

I don't change my retrieve for the water clarity. I've had fish in dirty water respond well to everything from swimming it just below the surface, to counting rocks.

Lateral line, some of y'all need to learn what that is.

Bass do not need to "see" your lure to find it!

My jig choice would be one with rattles & a trailer that moves alot of water.

I have caught some of my biggest bass on jigs in stained east Texas water, and I would use a black and blue jig with a kicking trailer. my rule of thumb is if you are fishing muddy or stained water, use dark baits for bottom contact and light colored moving baits. Hope this helps and tight lines!
