I had always heard of the Bucca baby shad but had no idea there was a blue gill size. Is one size (the shad size or the bigger blue gill) more popular than the other? Any personal experience with either?

I have a shad and a couple gills. Haven't caught anything on them yet, but they have an awesome action. I also haven't put a ton of time in on them. 

Both work. They are both upper water column baits. The gill should be in play now at this point of the spawn.

I have both, neither have touched the water yet.

I’ve caught a few good ones on the Gill color Shad.

I have fished both recently in a south Florida pond where there were plenty of bass guarding fry.

 

I was getting follows on the Gantarel Jr (I watched them) and then they'd slam into the side of it but not engulf it.

 

I threw the baby bullgill as a follow up - got slammed and hooked up (did not land).

 

Soon after I fished the baby bull shad fast near the top of the water column and a spawned-out keeper took it right in.

 

It is not a lot of experience, but they worked for me!

Ive looked at the these for atleast a year and haven't pulled the trigger so I read every thread about them. I would be interested to know if there is a different sink rate between the shad and gill and if they would be fished the same way.

Don't know about the sink rate, but they are supposed to be fished the same way.

Yup. Burn, burn, pause. Right under the surface. 

Agreed. I only use this as a top water at the pond and the results have been stellar so far

I have both but I like the gill shaped one better. The shad is very light and hard to cast and it doesn't stay down very well. It's easier to burn the gill and keep it down a little and it cast better. 

Seeing as I pond fish mainly I really want a gill now!! I said I didn't need a single thing the rest of the year fishing wise. Then I get on here.....

Yeah I convinced myself the other day I needed two more kinds of attractants. No telling what will come to mind next!

This spring I bought a couple of the Bull Gills and I am trying to figure out what rod I should throw them on. When I throw treble hook baits I think about my using one of my moderate composite crank rods but it may be a bit heavy for the 7' rod and the 7'10" seems like much longer than ideal. If I want to get away from the moderate rods I have two 7'2" Exprides, one being a MH and the other a H. Which rod would you recommend I try? 12 to 16lb FC on all of them.
