Rigging a swimbait that already has its own head and eyes onto a swim jig head

Featured Replies

I have a lot of swimbaits that already have their own head and eyes. I use belly hooks with those, but I would like to use some of them as swim jig trailers. How do you suggest rigging these on swim jig heads that ALSO have their own head and eyes? Or, should those type of swimbaits/trailers NOT be placed onto swim jigs at all?

Thanks!

Looks funny to me, but apparently bass like to eat four-eyed baitfish

The fish really don't care.

I've done extensive testing, and not only can fish not read, but they're really bad at counting.

I used to live near Oak Ridge.

Could just snip the head off straight or in a contour to match the jig if you think the fish don’t want to eat ole’ Blinky.

I cut the heads off trailers all of the time.  But that's to cut down on size or bring the appendages further in and change the action.

The fact is, fish, and most animals, can't count.  Bass may care if the bait has eyes, but won't really be able to determine if it has too many or too few of eyes.  That's why people wear those masks with the eyes in the backs of their heads in the jungles of India so tigers won't attack them from behind.  And tigers are a lot smarter than bass.

Yet we're told that fake eye spots are meant to scare predators.  I think we think too much of the eyes we put on the baits.  Easier to blame not getting bit on the eyes than it is to admit we're in the wrong spot.

I do the same thing. I cut them down to size or mostly just bite the first part off and then stick on the jig per size I need.

I love all of this advice! Thank you. It's funny to think about the multiple pairs of eyes, because there are lures out there (which I also have) which are transparent lipless cranks with tiny minnows inside, meant to look like small schools of baitfish. I suppose this wouldn't be much different, and perhaps could increase the strike rate 0.5% ?

Thank you!

Is that you 517!?  I see pro's all the time rig swimbaits that have eyes on them to a swimbait head that also has eyes on it.  I won't do it, but it must work okay..
