catfish beginner tips?

Featured Replies

I have an Okuma Rox 6-12lb and another Rox 6-15lb. Weight limit for both is 3/4oz. I usually like going the Carolina rig setup and leave around 18-22 inches for my leader line and I use either size 1, 2, or 1/0, 2/0. I live in SoCal if this helps. I usually use nightcrawlers, chicken dipped in cool aid, or shrimp. My pole is 6'6 and is medium action. Is this an okay rod for a beginner like me for catfish? I fish from the shore and in lakes.

It will work, but not ideal. You're not likely to hang into any large catfish with your bait options so most of the fish you'll be catching will be small and easily handled on that combo, just don't overdo it on the weight you choose.

I had the same Rox combo and it was one of the only rods that have ever broke on me, I use the reel for saltwater and its held up fine. I'm not sure how it would hold up against catfish.

Fresh cut bait is a good bait to use for catfish.

Wanted some catfish for the freezer. Three outings with jug lines baited with chunks of calf/beef liver did the trick. If you have trouble keeping it on the hook for casting, an elastic thread (Mike's Magic Thread) is your friend.

If you have nightcrawlers, catch smaller fish and use them for bait.
