My bass fishing mentor was Jason Lucas in the 50’s and Jay must be smiling in heaven with the expansion of light line bait casting reels and rods today.

Jay bet he could out fish another Bass fishing editor using sewing thread for line and won his bet.

Because of Jason Lucas influence to use the lightest line to control bass under the conditions you fish instead of line 3X the fishes weight helped my bass fishing success.

Why? You must think about where to cast and where the bass wants to go after it’s hooked. Your tackle needs to match the basses environment.

The vast majority of my DD bass were caught on line 10 lb test or less after casting over 120 feet. Today that qualifies as BSF.

The modern BFS casting stuff is simply amazing.  With the Shimano/Shimano setup, one can keep the weight down to about 1/2 lb for the whole rig, which is my current favorite setup.

Shimano Poison Adrena 163L BFS (JDM)      3.35 oz         6-12 lb line rating                  6’3”

Daiwa Steez CT SV                                         5.3 oz          8/110, 10/85 line capacity

Shimano Alderbaran MGL 30HG (JDM)         4.8 oz          7/100 line capacity

Here's a diminutive Shakespeare 1740 Tournament freespool.

From the late '30s, one of the rare prewar bait reels with an aluminum spool,

shallow spool by design - it came with a factory balsa arbor.

It's loaded with 4-lb silk braid.

It will cast and fish 1/8 oz with modern BFS reels, but takes a bit more thumb to cast.

I've caught the vast majority of my bass on 6 and 8lb mono.  Granted, the bass where I am don't get as big as they do down south or out west.  My PB 7lb 5oz smallmouth was caught on 6lb and a 1/8 tube jig.  This was long before (20 years) I got into BFS though, I was using a Daiwa SS Tournament 700 and a Gander Mountain Guide Series 6'6" ML 1/8-3/8.

Oh yeah, let me spread out some sourdough into the shape of Spain and melt some cheese over it and burn it just so... :)
