I like it because I throw an A Rig and a Pad Crasher frog on it and only change the spool tension and SVS and never crack the side cover open. Zero and I mean zero backlashes too. But ugh I still love my Lews! The mag brakes really fit me and my style of casting and I like the feel in my hand over the SLX slightly.

I've always thought my Lew's BB1 might be my longest-casting reel.

I had the Lew's combo mag + centrifugal in Custom Inshore.  

My gripe was the weight of the spool add-on, getting me back to the clean-spool mag brake as my favorite Lew's.  That's also what sent Lew's back to the drawing board for their new lightweight centrifugal spool add-on.  Sorry, I never took a photo of the combo brake.  

You can find the same mag brake in Abu Revo (though LFS frame design is superior, in simple things like latching the palm plate).  

I gave the Custom Inshore to my buddy Lou, who needed to fish a baitcaster in place of his Zebco Bullet.  The combo brake is good for a beginner casting 1/4 oz and up.  

 

Only recently resolved my ML niche with Zillion SV TW.  

Daiwa's SV brake is the no-brainer brake for the widest possible lure range - set the mag for wind control with your lightest lure and forget about it.  Gives you the same start-up brake as centrifugal for heavy weights, then relaxes to lower-force linear mag for longer cast.  

You can watch tournament casters doing the same thing manually, adjusting their mag brake from heavy start-up through lighter mid-flight to get over the hump, then turning it off for the longest possible finish.  (They don't care if the end of their cast backlashes - they only load a little more line than their longest cast)

Oh yes yes yes thankyou!!! This was happening to me all the time last year throwing heavier jigs and jerkbaits, I learned you have to throw hard but not Jerky and in quick motions. This is very helpful and will read, thankyou!

Yeah, I’m lucky enough to have D&R as a in-person tackle shop in Kalamazoo, MI! When I snapped my St. Croix Triumph, they were very helpful! And I need to upgrade my Black Max soon, so I’ll look at this thread more.

I personally like kastking equipment, they are great for the price. They have the speed demon elite, and the crixus that are in the $100 price range. I also like 13 fishing, they have a few reels in the $100 price range including the origin line.

how you like your black max, I just picked one up at walmart for the hell of it, seems really nice and casts far, casts lighter lures farther than my 200 dollar revo stx.

It is very nice! Had it for 2 years, but I just wanna see what a reel such as an SLX compares to it.

I have a Black Max and a SLX. Its night and day. Yes the black max is a great start reel, arguably the best for beginners, but the first time you have to pull a fish out of heavy cover and that frame flexes you will wish you had that SLX. Its solid and smooth. Shimano does more with four bearings than alot of companies do with nine.

Braid itself isn't hard enough to cut through SS. But when you fish in salt water or dirty freshwater, the braid has tiny crevices and pores that collect little particles that turn the line into an abrasive saw.
