Daiwa gearing

Featured Replies

today I was looking at reviews of various reels and a couple of the reviews took off the side plate on the handle side, and a noticed a lot of plastic gearing surrounding the pinion and behind the main gear. i noticed this mainly on the tatula sv, has anyone had problems with this, or does anyone have thoughts. your feedback is apreiated.

It's to drive the level wind worm gear. No problems. Plastic/nylon has been used for years across manufacturers in this position.

Zero issues with any of my Sv’s or any other of my  Daiwa’s

Across all brands, even up to daiwa flagship steez and  morethan reels, “plastic”  non main gear/pinion parts is the norm aside from the clutch. Its been that way for years. Its a non issue.

Ever since I found out Daiwa was using plastic parts I noticed I could feel the components in my Taty SV flexing if I was using anything heavier then 1/4 oz.

That is really odd. I have no idea what you are feeling flex, but I seriously doubt it is the gears in a tatula SV.

Can you feel it in your Shimanos that also use it in the same positions for years? They're even using a plastic worm gear now in some models.

Nylon is great for gears that don't see much stress, like in a level wind.  Nylon is self lubricating, light weight, doesn't corrode, doesn't shrink or expand, and is fairly stable (as far as plastics go) to oxidation and UV light.  You don't want it in your cranking gears, as they strip easily.  But for parts that should never see much stress, they'll last longer and stay smoother than metal gears.

Well I'll be able to feel it now

Yeah the whole "flex" issue for LMB/SMB is mostly imagination.  Your more likely to see Bigfoot then have a reel flex bass fishing.  It was a non issue 20 years ago when reels were made of materials that were as rigid.

Been like that for a long time as everyone says. I think it is excellent engineering as far as material choice. Think about it. There is usually no appreciable stress on the level wind drive gear so nylon should last forever...BUT..if something DOES go wrong, I want the weak part that is likely to break to be a $1.50 nylon gear rather than the gear holding and so pushing the damage down the line to more of the reel or something else that is more expensive and harder to replace.
