Frogg Toggs ok for summertime rain jacket?

Featured Replies

My packable goretex rain jacket leaks so I need to find a replacement. This is primarily for use during spring and summer kayak fishing trips when rain storms pass through. I don't want a disposable el-cheapo rain jacket - I want something that is going to last me thru a few seasons. I know Frogg Toggs are cheap but they seem popular - are they a decent rain jacket? I'm willing to pay for some of the nicer waterproof/breathable jackets so interested in any you might recommend.

I have old Cabela's Gore-Tex from many years ago...still dry. If your jacket leaks, try applying a new coat of durable water repellent, sometimes that helps.

I think all Gore will leak over time. If your really want waterproof, get some Helly Hansen raingear.

I do have some Frogg Toggs...keep them in all my vehicles as backup. Never used them...

I use the Frogg Toggs rain suit and poncho in the summertime. Summers are way too hot in south Louisiana for gore-tex rain gear.

Frogg Toggs are the best, if you pick the right one for summer fishing.  They make several thicknesses for different weather conditions, but the summer thin version is the best for Florida.  I buy  a larger size than I usually wear. so I can put layer under in cooler weather.  I also get the pants two sizes bigger so they slip right over jeans in the cooler weather.  Just make sure you get the correct material, it makes all the difference.

If it is truly your goretex that is leaking (not likely) then it is most likely a warranty issue and I would contact the manufacturer.  Having worked in the outdoor industry for about 10 years after college we saw a ton of people come in and claim their jackets were leaking and of the 100s we would send back, most times the customer would refuse anything else, and I cannot remember a single time the goretex was culprit.  I did see some where the inner liner was worn through but most times it was simply the DWR on the outside that got work away which allowed the outer fabric to soak up moisture and effectively halt any breathability of the garment.  Replace that and you will be good to go till it wears off again.

All that being said, I am not a fan of frog toggs jackets as their fit doesn't seem to allow much movement.   it also depends on your use of the jacket too though.  Is it for protection when running spot to spot or are you in a kayak or bank fishing etc....running across a lake requires a different heavier jacket than in a kayak or bank fishing.  I personally kayak so I use an arcteryx jacket designed for mountaineering and it is great but would not be my first choice for running at higher speed across a lake.

Gore Tex doesn't do well long term when its wadded up or even folded.  Ive got some really good gore tex parka and wading jacket shells but when it gets warmer I wear the light frogg toggs.  They breath well, very light dry, out fast, pack great and if I put a hook through its no big deal.

I have tried Frogg Toggs and I bake in them.  I have a Gore Tex Paclite jacket from Outdoor Research that works great.  Pants, I use REI Gore Tex rain pants.  The jacket breaths well the pants, not as much but they keep me dry.  I have been using both for a couple of years.  I also have shell jacket from Arcteryx that is hot in the summer but is awesome in fall and early spring.   It's bomb proof.

Patagonia Nano is pretty good for passing storms and small enough to fit in a pocket. It isn't for 'the sky opened up' kinds of rain. Sold as a runner's windbreaker.

GoreTex is really a bunch of different weights now; it is worth spending a little time on their site.

if you don't have the ultralight goretex make sure it has pit zips.
