cleaning rods and reels

Featured Replies

You have been helpful in the past, so I ask for advice. Trout season is open but it's getting hot. I want to store my and my nephews trout rods and reels until next year. What is a good method for cleaning and storing the rods and reels that we have used? What types of liquids should I use and avoid?

Thanks for your assistance.

Mix up some Simple Green All-Purpose at 20:1 - S.G. is what I use for all my cleaning.

Rods: Damp rag, wipe them down with the S.G. and let them dry.

Reels: Standard maintenance for bearings and gears. Outsides - same as with the rods.

If you are only using the rods/reels during trout season and haven't dunked them I would probably just spray down the outside with KVD line and lure and cover them up.

Good tackle is an investment. Keeping your reels clean and lubed is the best way to protect your investment. And, it makes the whole experience of bass fishing more fun.

For better or worse i just use Windex with Ammonia and the a very thin application of some top quality Carnuba wax. Only the good stuff that is 100% Carnuba though because it will dry to a very hard shell that will not attract and retain dust or dirt.
