Favorite budget rod for dropshotting?

Featured Replies

Looking for something around 100$ or hopefully less. Will be using it for dropshotting mainly and maybe some other small finesse presentations like ned rigs etc.

Spinning

Little over your stated budget at retail, but during sales you can find it for around $90 - Dobyns Fury 702SF

I have one as my general finesse rod and it's well worth the extra cost.

If $100 is a hard limit - my secondary finesse rod would probably work good for you - Okuma Reflexions 701MLA - retail is $75

Thank you!

Dobyns Colt spinning rod would be in your budget, not a bad rod for the price!

Having handled Colts in several power/action classes and compared them...I'd take a Diawa Aird-X 701MLFS over the Colt 702SF.

Air-d is good. The 703 power Lamiglas rod that's $100 is nice as well.  Name escapes me.

$99.99 Lew’s TP1X spinning rod. I have the dropshot specific model and it has been great.

Either a Phenix Maxim or 13s Fate Black or Fate V3.  Tackle Tour has a really in depth review of the Maxim and it did really well in just about every category.

If you're from California, you may be familiar with Turner's Outdoorsman. They have a house brand called the Californian CBX that are an excellent value at $109 for their 7'1" M spinning rods (I got mine on sale for $94). The 7'1" M that I have (I also have two of their casting rods) weighs a scant 3.65 ounces, has a very comfortable reel seat, and it fishes nearly as well as my Daiwa Kage and Tatula rods that sell for up to $80 more. They have been out of them online for quite a while, but the individual stores have had several models in stock throughout the 'unusual circumstances we are currently dealing with'.

The Daiwa Aird-X would probably be my second choice, and they are considerably cheaper. I much prefer them to the Dobyns Colt rods, JMHO.

Funny you mention Turners. I also have their 7'1" M spinning rod, and love it.

Re: the Colt, I bought one about a year about, about a n hour into our fishing trip, 8" of the tip broke off, and no, I wasn't high sticking it, or using a bait that was heavier than the rating.

Another rod you may want to check out is the Diawa XT Tatula, about $ 99.00, pretty dang good rods for the $$.

I use a H2O Ethos Micro 7' 3" ML for my drop shot rod but have also used it for Neds and other finesse baits and it works very well.

I'll second this. If you can find a deal or spend a little more, the Fury 702SF will be great.
