Striper fishing on the Sacramento river

Featured Replies

Hello novice angler here. I'm sure this has been answered tons of times but..... Anyways I just purchased a heavy wooden glider for striper. It's 2oz. My question is what's a good setup casting combo or spinning for a heavy lure like this. I'm using it from the shore so I was thinking a longer rod would be best.  Also I've been told 50-65 braid.   I would use my current slx 151 combo but it's only rated for 1oz lures I think.  Thanks in advance for the help.

That's a lot out of my budget range.  Beautiful setup though

I Just told you the spec so you  get something like that in your budget, Any XH or (1oz to 3oz) rod 7'1 to 7'6. Any reel can handle heavy fish, I think Glenn talk about a quantum he using always that have 18lb drag and it was really good price. he using it in his videos on YouTube, you can look it up there.

The rod will be one of the most important pieces of equipment to fish that lure effectively.  By the picture, it looks like it will have a "walk the dog" type action.  You'll need a rod with a good amount of backbone but a soft enough tip to work it effectively.  Based upon your budget, take a look at the following rods.  It should leave you with some spending money for a reel.  Also, go to 80 lb. braid.  65 lb. braid will work if you have it.  I would not mess with 50 lb. on Sacramento River stripers especially when working a bait like you shared.

Sounds like you can use your reel - one more rod to throw into the mix
