what should I use this baitcast combo for??

Featured Replies

Hi there, new member here, I was wondering what i should use this baitcasting combo for. I have a dobyns fury 7ft 3in heavy action, paired with a shimano curado dc reel in the 8:5:1 gear ratio. I really love this combo and its such a joy to fish with but cant decide what to use it for. If you have any other questions let me know and I will try and answer them. Any and all info is greatly appreciated!

Heavy rod, fast (36IPT) reel

Flip, pitch, punch, frog, buzzbait...those are just off the top of my head.

If it's anything like the Sierra 734, it may be easier listing what you CAN'T use that rod for.

What kind of line is it spooled with?

I have that exact rod..use it for Texas rigs, weightless senkos and jigs mostly.

The 734 is a very versatile rod.  With a high speed reel, it would be a great buzzbait combo.

That being said, it'll work for worms, jigs, bladed jigs, swim jigs, small swimbaits, spinnerbaits.  It would probably work for ripping traps in grass, but I probably wouldn't crank with it.  Other end of the spectrum I would be hesitant to frog or punch, unless it was my only option.  Long story short, it'll do a lot.

Should be a good all around pitching rod for moderate to heavy cover. Maybe not so much for punching thick grass but it would work in lighter duty grass. If it has some tip action would be a good 5" to 6" swimbait, 3/8- 5/8 oz spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. Maybe a good buzz bait and general purpose structure rod for 1/2 oz football jigs and Carolina rigs.
