stewa107 Posted November 28, 2021 Posted November 28, 2021 I'm thinking of trying to fish Candlewood at the end of April when my son is on leave. I'm usually on Champlain but he wants to try somewhere different. Is is worth the 5 hour trip at that time of season? Quote
leinad Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 live around the corner from the lake and have no boat so i don't fish it to often. reports say it's ok and if you go you can fish lake lillanonah and thats about 8 miles away.that i fish from shore and have a little more knowledge of. sm and lmb , pike and perch are plentiful and my advice about either lake is do not go on weekend.my opinion about either lake is that there are to many tournaments held and the lakes are not that large and thus affect the fishing. can't understand the idea of fishing something other than lk george or champlain. maybe try vermont. Don51 Posted November 30, 2021 Posted November 30, 2021 April is a tough month! Too many cold fronts and bluebird skies. I wouldn't go on a 5 hr. road trip that time of the year. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 30, 2021 Super User Posted November 30, 2021 It could be 75 F or a blizzard. April is a month I plan trips down south, not the northeast. 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted November 30, 2021 Super User Posted November 30, 2021 I agree with the 2 posts above me. If you're traveling 5 hours you may as well travel a few more and have more enjoyment. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 30, 2021 Super User Posted November 30, 2021 Five hours south, and your almost into prespawn/spawn. Quote
stewa107 Posted November 30, 2021 Author Posted November 30, 2021 Thanks he is coming home around April 25 so that when we were thinking. Just for a new experience 3 hours ago, J Francho said: It could be 75 F or a blizzard. April is a month I plan trips down south, not the northeast. If I had the time from work I'd be taking him to Santee Cooper or the Stick Marsh lol Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 30, 2021 Super User Posted November 30, 2021 I really like Santee Cooper. Stay at Black's Camp. A closer trip would Smith Mountain Lake, and a bonus is it's not that busy in April. Quote
EWREX Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 candlewood is the best lake in our state by far. we had 20+ pound bags of smallmouth come in our BASS nation tournaments this past april Quote
PourMyOwn Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 I look for ice out lakes, especially when the northern end still has a skim coat of ice for smallmouth. Jerkbaits, deep cranks and creatures on football jigs are killer that time of year. Quote

Kjruiz Posted December 26, 2021 Posted December 26, 2021 What I like about fishing CWood in April is the absence of recreational boaters/wake boats. If you want to give CWood a try, this would be a good time. I would say about half of the lakefront owners aren’t going to have docks in yet. Milfoil growth is going to be at a minimum. Fishing tournaments are going to be kicking off heavy starting April 24 so there will be some pressure but it’s early in the season and a big enough lake. Looking back through my camera roll pulled in some nice ones April this year. 1 Quote
