Falling Iguanas Alert!

Featured Replies

As if things couldn't get any stranger here in Florida, we now have a Falling Iguanas alert.  Iguanas are huge lizards that can't tolerate temperatures lower than 50 degrees.  When the temp drops, so do they.  Iguanas can grow to over 6 feet long and weigh up to 11 pounds.   My son lives in Weston just west of Ft. Lauderdale and he tells me the trees and backyards are full of these things.  They chase cars too...

Does falling mean that the Iguanas are actually falling to their death from cold temperatures?

Must be a hefty population of them as I have a close friend who goes to Florida several times year on guided hunts down the river shooting them with an airgun.

Never mind, read that they are alive.

LOL.

One hit us in the windshield down in the Keys a few years back, no damage, unlike the coconut that got us.

We have a freeze warning down here for Sunday morning.

A few years ago when it got that cold I was driving toward Little Gasparilla Island and they were all over the side of the road.
I remember thinking we never saw anything like that on the So. Side of Chicago!

I’d take a falling iguana alert any day over the snow squall warning, and added cold weather warning we’re getting here tonight. It’s like mosquitos and blackflys here in the spring. I’ll take them any day over snow, at least I don’t have to shovel them!

I've never seen them in Tampa.  Biggest thing we have to worry about this weekend is falling drunks, it's Gasparilla this weekend.  (Mardi Gras in Tampa for those that don't know).

Iguanas are tough animals they will survive this cold front like they do every year. Even people hunting them has not done much, iguanas keep thriving and will continue to thrive on the banks of the canals of South Florida. Iguanas are here to stay might as well enjoy watching them when you fish.
