FGs and thin lines

Featured Replies

I've had problems before with having the FG knot slip with 2 lb diameter braid to a 8 lb leader.  I go to the Alberto knot and have no issues and I use the FG knot with thicker lines on baitcasters and have no problems.  So for those of you tying the FG knot with 2 and 4 lb diameter braids, how are you finishing the knot?  I was going to try 4 alternating clinch knots to finish.  I've tried the Rizzuto finish but that makes the knot as thick as the Alberto and defeats the purpose of the FG to begin with.  Any advice is appreciated.

I use a lot of 3# - 14# braid (<1-3 lb. diameter nylon) to 6 and 8 pound leader and use the FG regularly without much issue. I finish with 4 alternating half hitches (2 before cutting/2 after) and then a 4 wrap Rizzuto. Don't see how the Rizzuto finish is as large/larger than the Alberto since the nylon leader is never doubled. It's no bigger than a uni or the half hitches and secured on the single main line strand. Main reason for me with FG is greater strength, not thinner knot.

I regularly use FG knots with  8lb braid to 6 and 8lb FC without issue.

Maybe you are not pulling tight enough? That thin braid cuts like a knife.

I use these to protect my fingers for the real thin braid:

I don't do anything extra to finish the knot.

Just three half hitches

FG is the only main-leader knot I use. On 10# 832 to 6# InvizX on my finesse rig, I finish with 2-before cut and 2-after cut half-hitches...but no Rizzuto.

I haven't had an issue.

I go with 2 half hitches withe the mono. Then 4 more half hitches withe braid over the mono tag end and braid mainline, snip mono tag end then 3-4 more half hitches with the braid. Snip it close then take a lighter and melt it down.

This is what I am going to experiment with first.  I meant half hitches in my original post not clinch knots.  Looks like I'll have to take another look at the Rizzuto.  Maybe I am tying it wrong because it was considerably thicker than the FG knot and the half hitches I was tying.  Thanks for the responses everyone.

If the knot is slipping it's probably not your finish thats the issue. FG shouldn't slip even if its unfinished. You should be able to cinch down prior to finishing the knot with no slippage.

Ya - the braid wrapping should be slightly deforming the leader-line as you go along. That's where the 'grip' comes from...that's why tension on the lines as you create the knot.

It doesn't slip on heavier braid that I use on baitcasters or the 15-20 lb braid on spinning reels.  It is only when I go to the 8 lb/ 2 lb diameter braid that I have slippage.  I'll make a cast and the whole leader goes sailing.  That has never happened with my baitcasters and only a few times with the 20 lb braid on spinning reels.

I just use the Shin knot!  FG knot is the devil!  I want to fish not spend all day trying to tie a line to line knot!??
